In yet another complete left-turn for PJ Harvey's sound, White Chalk has the ghostly and gothic feeling that is translated through the album artwork. Her vocals take on this air of haunting, like a specter in a white dress floating around your home and opening drawers and doors to shake you to your core, far higher in register than her typical vocal styling.

"White Chalk" sounds like an long-gone ghost finding an old, broken, slightly out of tune upright piano in the mezzanine of an abandoned house in the woods.
