Ominous is an overused word when writing about frightening experimental music, but Purge expresses the feeling in its entirety: the dread of waiting for the inevitable, the horror of it coming, and, perhaps scarier still, the anxiety of what might be left after it's gone.

The tempestuous debut by producer and vocalist Felicia Chen is an emotionally tense album that whips between violent outbursts and quiet pockets of respite.

PURGE by Dis Fig is a sonic guerrilla surprise attack on the most fragile parts of the human psyche.

This album euphorically sinister. Usually subtle and unexpected in it's relentlessness, PURGE guides the listener through a shallow hallway before grabbing you by the throat and pulling you into a dark room, where unspeakable things happen. Even in the album's most quiet parts, such as Watering, there is a sense of anticipation that keeps you gripped.

It's very intriguing, yet kind of mismatched at some points. Like from going from The Hermit to Purge. I feel like the transition is off. Other than a couple boring sections, I'm left somewhat satisfied, just wanting a little more, you know?

Fuck this was solid all throughout. She reminds me highly of Pharmakon on this album.

Dis Fig tossed every other release aside this week with her debut full-length, PURGE. Her blend of industrial electronic, tormented, strained vocals and orchestral composition combine in an absolutely gripping solo effort. Intense, harsh moments give way to quiet, creeping melodies, only to be launched back into an emotionally laden, chaotic, noise-filled soundscape. The ebb and flow of this album is pure perfection.

The comparisons to Pharmakon are pretty evident, although PURGE does enough to diversify itself from that experimental sound and do something of its own. This is still a brooding album that feels like it fully embraces its horror-esque elements. A solid overall experimental album worth checking out.
