Weyes Blood. Julia Jacklin. Stella Donnelly. Jessica Pratt. Sharon Van Etten. Now this. There simply has been an astounding amount of releases this year that have blown me away as the female singer-songwriter continues to dominate my listening.

This is a beautifully arranged, constantly pleasant and immaculate release by Harding. Each track comes with purpose, and the vocal delivery is constantly above par and engaging. I've listened to The Barrel all week in preparation for this album to ... read more

9.29.19 Still listen to this regularly. REALLY sad I can't see her on this current tour, the setlists have been sublime so far. This album is a top 10 of the decade type album for me, no doubts.

Only thing I would changed on this album...

Designer should have been the opener followed by Fixture Picture. This is how they have been playing them live, followed by the remainder of the a side.

We are nothing but a braid in the void, as the album cover indicates. The peculiar condition of our existence cries out for something: a story, a narrative, an explanation. Some clue or idea about what our existence could mean. Aristotle was the first to generalize the question: “Why is there something rather than nothing?” My own question has always been the opposite: “Why is there nothing rather than something?” That is, given infinite time and unlimited resources why ... read more

Gave it a few spins already and I can confidently say it's not only a sure contender for AOTY for me, but also one of my favorite albums of the past few years. Harding is truly incomparable. Such a unique voice and such a strong lyricist. DESIGNER builds upon everything that made PARTY so special. Not a weak track here, and perfectly sequenced.

Fav tracks: 'Designer', 'Zoo Eyes', 'The Barrel', 'Weight of the Planets'.

Aldous Harding parallels the relationship between an artist and their products with an existential conversation about divine creation and the self. While we can produce something, the product will inevitably gain a meaning divorced from the maker. We only have so much control over our outputs, and allowing them to exist without prescribed meaning can be liberating for both parties. By presenting her own relationship between the designer and the designed in her music, Aldous challenges the ... read more

She comes across a bit mannered in places - especially the vocal delivery which switches tone and diction too frequently. It's slightly distracting, a little stiff, sometimes awkward.

Still, the voice remains 'nice enough' throughout - though not one to launch a thousand ships or anything like that.

I'm also unsure as to whether this truly builds up the unified atmosphere it was clearly digging for - but Aldous certainly hits pay dirt on a fair few of the tunes here ('Weight of the Planets' ... read more

2019 is already an amazing year for female artists and Aldous Harding is no exception. "Designer" is a meticulously composed, immaculately produced and beautifully performed record that engages with strong lyricism and timely themes. Do NOT miss out on this!

On Designer, I think that Aldous begins to dominate her formula : unique vocals presence, smooth instrumentation, dense lyrical content.

She knows where she can be quirky, when she can be calm and what atmosphere she wants to establish. The best examples are the singles (the barrel is a huge contender for best single of the year), the title track and weight of the planets. The entire album is very delightful to listen multiple timed and I think that the listenings could just improve with ... read more

Happy to report that this record lives up to the solid singles released with immaculately sequenced tracks with no sight of a filler. Her voice is more upfront and center with subtly nuanced, detailed lyrics that reads like poetry. The compelling combination of vocals, acoustic guitar and piano fills weaves remarkable results. On top of that, her coining Camus on the closer elevates the emotional weight of this album. Without question on my top 5 of this year.

Whilst Designer might not have quite the same depth and contrast of sounds as Harding's previous LP, I would say it works better as an album. The palette of this album feels so refined and can be felt in every track, yet each one has its own character - something which her last album perhaps faltered on with a few tracks.

I think her vocal style has been streamlined here too, with her vocal delivery and lyricisms on 'Fixture Picture' and 'Treasure' managing to sound elegant and deadpan at the ... read more

I was not sold on Aldous Harding’s 2017 breakout “Party” — I found myself put off by her vocal affectations and intense songwriting. But with “Designer,” I think I’m starting to come around. It helps that the album represents a substantial creative leap forward for Harding, both in songwriting and in sound. Centerpiece “The Barrel,” in particular, is a truly excellent song in lyrics, melody, and production — it is undoubtedly Harding's ... read more

Edit: Another album from this year that I've had no desire to actually return to. I even said in my original review that I wasn't expecting to return, and now I remember very little about it. This album is just not for me at all.

A beautifully crafted project. Aldous Harding creates a gorgeous album with brilliant vocals and wonderful yet simplistic instrumentals. Saying this, you would expect me to give it a higher score. But no.

The Barrel stays hittin, but some of the other tracks are cutting deep as well. I have some indie folk fatigue from this year, but I will still put this on to cry to this week.

First introduced to me by @dearsongs & @JohnLewisHoward... Followed by @holsgr & @DiegoPaim01 (whom I translate using Google translator) while avoiding the journalistic review hype and finally a moment in time presents itself where I can sit still [I'm ADHD] and allow for a decent listening experience in order to arrive at this (somewhat) informed opinion. That is... As if @MarkCooper would ever think as such. [Grins] See? I told you I was ADHD. Regardless, 'Designer' is a brilliant ... read more

decent album but pretty underwhelming considering the potential shown on her last album, she seems to have played it safe this time around which although the album is pleasant seems the wrong move

With obvious influence from the Fiona Apples of the world, Aldous Harding delivers an indie folk album that doesn't do too much to distinguish itself. That being said, she makes good use of her influences, and the rhythms & production tend to be mostly passable.

When Designer works, there's enough instrumental interest to move the songs forward. "The Barrel" nicely mixes a soft, twangy guitar with some wind instrument and pianos to create a very entertaining folk tune. The hook ... read more

Enfim, são ... read more

Am I crazy that I am missing the Weyes Blood/Julia Jacklin vibe? I’m not even a big singer-songwriter fan but those two have been my favorite albums of the year, but the polished production here feels like it robs her of the emotion her voice can evoke. It’s DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, and the lyrics are fun, varied, and intermittently bizarre! It’s a great album, but maybe the emotion will rise from the depths on future listens. Pretty much all the songs are super catchy!

A bit of a disappointment here. It doesn't reach the height of Party, but it certainly doesn't fall flat on it's face either. Harding is still a singular voice in her indie folk crowd. This is ultimately just a slight stumble, and I expect her to bounce back and mature even further as an artist. It's minimalism at times plays to its detriment, but her wordplay and voice are still unique enough to keep this as an artist to watch. This is still an easy recommendation for someone looking for some ... read more
