This is a rare occurrence: An album is hyped up to be absolutely fantastic, delivers on its promise, and everyone seems to agree. Revel in this, because who knows when AOTY.org will ever see something like it again.

WARNING: THE SURGEON GENERAL HAS DETERMINED THAT THE SOUNDS YOU ARE ABOUT TO HEAR WILL ALWAYS BE DEVASTATING TO YOUR EAR. (sleep well)

Welp...no kidding, this was something else! The first time I heard the Palmolive sample and instrumental, I started to actually cry! Didn't sleep thanks to this fucking album, but it was worth it!

I don't think simple words can describe and explain the true significance and quality of Bandana. I've read through many of the user reviews and I think there's a ... read more

I was expecting to love this but not to the point of it being in my top 5 of 2019. "Bandana" is a hard-hitting project from beginning to end. Every song is absolute fire, every little skit is either funny or inspiring, the production is very funky and creative and MR. FREDDIE GIBBS ABSOLUTELY NAILS HIS PERFORMANCE. I danced through thw whole album with a smile on my face. This album is absolutely ... read more

Uh...hot take?

Holy Jesus. This is not just a popular release. This is THE popular release. Like, how critically acclaimed can a album be?!

The top rated album of 2019!
Apparently the best hip hop record since To Pimp A Butterfly!
A 'modern day classic'!
The next Madvillany, if not BETTER!

Jesus, did this album suck you guys/gals off and then give you a goddamn Ferrari? What the hell is so special here?

Granted, I was going into this record with pretty high hopes. Freddie Gibbs is ... read more

Edit: After giving it a few more listens, I think I may have overhyped it a bit. I loved it as much as I said for the first two or three listens, but since then this has worn off on me. I now find myself coming back to this a lot less than both Piñata and Madvillainy, and I find it difficult to actually convince myself to listen to it again. Still, this is a tremendous album and still one of the best to come out of the year so far.

Rewriting this after the immense amount of drag this album has come to endure from me. I narrowed in after is initial release and to be frank, was incredibly impulsive and way too naive to wipe my review, but now may as well be the time.

If anything, this highlights my first complaint of the record. These songs are good, yes. They’re well produced, and cater to some unique style in Madlib’s arsenal, however they aren’t as CAPTIVATING as I would like them to be. This results ... read more

These motherfuckers did it. They actually did it.
Production is a bit more laid back than Piñata overall, quality is S-tier, which was obvious enough given that it's Madlib, very refreshing to see that he still has creativity all the way until now. I'd prefer the beats on Piñata by a slight margin (mainly because of Shitsville and Bomb) but yeah very great. NOTE: Madlib, your album amazing, but I hope this is the last time you use your iPad producing an entire project. Because, ... read more

I seriously don't try to be contrarian. I don't set out to listen to an album everyone loves/hates and go "Ha HA! Now this will piss off the MASSES! THEY WILL BE OUTRAGED by my ACT OF REJECTION of their MUSICAL NORMS!" I'm certain that everybody here has a perfectly logical and valid reason why this is their AOTY. But this.....what is this? WHY?

Ignoring how I think this production doesn't work at all with it being either completely lost in the song or distractingly loud. Ignoring ... read more

Im expecting this to be a 10 tbh

This is now one of the best rap albums to come out of this decade. Freddie gibbs and madlib literally can do no wrong they've made 2 masterpieces in a row. The production here is more toned to the style freddie usually is better on but still has that great madlib production feel to it with obscure samples and great loops. Freddie here is hungry asf even more aggressive on piñata with constant flows and great lyricism. Everything here is top tier and ... read more

Rap is clearly today's pop. Sometimes it's time to stop listening to Future, Travis Scott and Cardi B, who dominate streaming platforms and listen to the songs of more demanding rap artists such as Freddie Gangsta Gibbs and producer Madlib. "Bandana" is the second album of their trilogy started with "Piñata" in 2014 which is considered a hip-hop classic. The formula has been improved: Gibbs' prosody is more inventive than ever, his rhymes kicks with humor, bravado and ... read more

I am glad that you like it guys , but for me it is an ordinary, boring, uninteresting album without any replay value.
I do not know what is happening to me .. I have the feeling that something has broken in me when it comes to hip-hop. A year ago it was a genre that I loved but when I got to know new music, I gradually turned it over and now I suddenly can not feel any pleasure listening to such music. I know it's just in my head but I do not know how to change it now:/

UPDATE (OG Score: 9.6): Hmm... yeah. This kinda shrunk on me. After I put in the original score, I felt like something wasn't right. Now I can see what's wrong with this. I still love this record, don't get me wrong, but there is a problem that just came into mind after a few more listens. Freddie Gibbs' lyrics, while still spot-on, don't have the same energy as "Piñata". There are maybe a few references that are a little dated (the Pokemon GO reference) and that anti-vaxx line ... read more

This is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. Period.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's 2nd collaborative album after 2014's Piñata is one of the best rap albums to land in the 21st century. I know that is saying a lot because there are other albums like To Pimp A Butterfly, The Blueprint, The Money Store, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Good Kid, m.a.a.d city which are all defining records of the 21st century. But, in my opinion maybe it does not have the impact of TPAB or ... read more

THEY REALLY JUST DID THAT? FREDDIE W E N T O F F F F F F F

I genuinely have no problems with this album; the production is stellar (I mean he is Madlib after all), Freddie's flows are really energetic and fun, and while the features are minimal they are some of the best moments on the entire album.

If any hip-hop album this year can top this I will be stunned. This, however, is an album where most of the album I'll find myself coming back to the most, hopefully. Yeah, it's nothing totally ... read more

Edit: I'm not afraid to say it, this really grew on me. Olive oil in a dish is pretty scrumptious when used properly. Crime Pays might be my favorite rap song of the year.

Original:
I feel like Madlib and Freddie mix like oil and water. As in...they don't..., but the result is a pretty colorful mess regardless. Beware though! It might just stain your clothes too.

Gibbs to every rapper dropping an album in 2019: "You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me."
