It’s another glorious achievement for an artist who has created so much amazing art since arriving into the world fully formed way back in 1982.

AllMusic

Her most accessible record in some time, though her use of recognizable genre, melody, rhythm, and harmony, shatters conventional notions. It is searing, raw and lusty, tender, open and vulnerable.

90
Tiny Mix Tapes

All fetish and confection aside, Boy is a living, gasping, impassioned/dispassionate grapple with existence. It patiently yet economically moves through melody and rhythm to walking, dancing, convulsing, and fleshing the fuck out.

80
The Line of Best Fit

In true form with Bozulich’s other solo efforts over the years, Boy is intense, intrusive, brutally honest, compelling and mature if not ironically titled; it certainly bears nothing in common with infancy.

80
The Skinny

Her lyrics are claustrophobic confessionals, her songs immaculate dirges and murder ballads.

Exclaim!

Simply put, there are few artists with the precision and poetic fortitude of Carla Bozulich, and on Boy, she commands attention like no one else.

70
PopMatters

Most importantly it sounds like nothing other than Bozulich’s own twisty back catalog, her career spent distorting punk rock and country and the blues into exciting new shapes.

Trippy, original, experimental wondrous songs of magic.

A huge step forward for Carla. Inspirations of Kate Bush' s The Dreaming album, perhaps even unconscious, easily recognized. Very intimate, somewhat brutal texts make the album even better.
