The History of the Albums – n°246

[I invite you to read my review of Eric Dolphy's Out There album (1961), to learn more about his life and this one]. On June 29, 1964, music experienced one of its most painful and tragic losses: the death of a legend, Eric Dolphy. *700 Followers* A special thanks to every one of you!

Today, in commemoration of 700 followers, I would like to shed some light on one of my favorite albums of all time: Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch. 'Out to Lunch!' is probably one of the more chaotic jazz records I've heard so far, the sheer unpredictability and musicianship is enough to keep me invested in what's going on, the compositions are obscure, quite alluring and performed well. All of this makes it stand out as a unique record in the avant-garde jazz field.

Tag it Post-Bop, Avant-Garde, Free Jazz... Dolphy’s ‘Out to Lunch' is an exceptional outpouring of creative and accomplished American Jazz. On this record, he teams with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Tony Williams (18 at the time!). An impressive lineup to be sure. Dolphy displays his prowess with the bass clarinet, flute, and alto saxophone and is credited for composing all 5 tracks. While some might reel at the style of Jazz music played here, it is quite ... read more

Out to Lunch, Eric Dolphy's magnum opus. A jazz record where everything seem so masterfully crafted and fully engaging every second to create playful record but one where you are simply impress by the complexity of the music. Easily a standout in the world of jazz and a must listen.
