CRITIC REVIEWS

60
The Independent

A very credible record with no real mistakes – but no real personality, either.

60
Rolling Stone

Now that he isn’t an underdog, Khalid lapses into a little too much new-star introspection, exploring an ivory-tower aloneness.

60
The Observer

At 17 tracks, the album feels long, but at its best, Free Spirit finds Khalid soaring closer to becoming pop’s next big star.

60
Exclaim!

Free Spirit is Khalid's coming-of-age story: it's well-constructed, but already feels too predictable at this point.

60
musicOMH

Free Spirit is a patchy album from an artist who is perfectly capable of delivering nifty falsetto lines and smooth come-ons, but who is also far too predisposed to sloppy downtempo numbers.

60
Slant Magazine

Khalid’s coming-of-age odyssey feels more like an American Eagle ad than a documentation of an authentic transformational experience.

60
HipHopDX

Despite the occasional moment of raw emotion and pop-oriented fun, the album is overshadowed by its blandness and monotony.

58
Entertainment Weekly

Many of its songs are composed of identical elements ... making for a thoroughly mid-tempo listening experience suited for shopping-mall speaker systems and consumer-driven playlists alike.

58
Consequence of Sound

Free Spirit is an unfocused mess and badly in want of editing. American Teen had a vivid personality. On Free Spirit, Khalid sounds caught between wanting to play a superstar and wanting to be himself, with the result that he sounds like neither.

50
Highsnobiety

Free Spirit isn’t a bad album by any means, even if it is somewhat overwrought at 17 tracks long. The problem is that the majority of these tracks blur together like the mumbled words that have come to define Khalid’s singing style.

50
AllMusic

An hour-long LP with little joy or even relief, one that is nearly static in energy level despite a carousel of producers.

47
Pitchfork

The second album from the historically inoffensive singer is another genreless collection of safe choices for a pop star in the making.

40
NME
If Khalid aimed for greater personality and darkness on ‘Free Spirit’, that honesty is often lost in overproduction, both in the music and in his lyricism. It is listenable, summery and occasionally thought-provoking, but tired in its laboured pushes for emotional sincerity.
40
The Guardian

Free Spirit looks bound to be a hit – there’s currently too much momentum behind Khalid’s career for any other outcome – but it’s hard to escape the feeling that something of his originality has been lost en route.

40
Spectrum Culture

Free Spirit indicates that the music industry has sucked the life out of Khalid.

I can see where he wanted to go with this record, but I heard this was a concept album; I can't find the concept lol. His voice really carries this record for me; as bloated and somewhat lazy this project is, I'm glad Khalid blessed me with his cool, jumping melodies and an all-around chill vibe.

This is the most drab, lacklustre and uneventful rnb album I heard so far this year. Free spirit more like a tired soul listening to this boredom.

Khalid's vocals are front and center and the melodies and production are pretty solid here. But the lyrics go into pretty cliche territory and "Free Spirit" is yet another safe R&B record overall.

Fav Tracks: Outta My Head, Talk, Saturday Nights, Hundred, Better, Right Back, Better, Self
