CRITIC REVIEWS

Pitchfork
The Atlanta rapper’s third record is both wildly innovative and strikingly consistent. It’s hard, melodic, experimental, and unlike anything else happening in mainstream rap.
80
Rolling Stone

Playboi Carti—Gen Z’s answer to Nosferatu—performs emotions, toggles between them, and disguises them with a disquieting ease. He has never been more enigmatic.

80
AllMusic

While losing some of the pop appeal of his previous work, Whole Lotta Red represents Playboi Carti coming into a new phase of his artistry, however jagged and disorienting the process may be.

80
Spectrum Culture
Carti comes into his own by stepping into the coffin of a vampire, scoffing at every critique tossed towards his vaudeville fangs.
70
PopMatters

Whole Lotta Red demonstrates Playboi Carti's commitment to dynamic growth and experimentation. However, it's painfully apparent that Carti needs more features.

NME
The rapper hoped to give fans a Christmas treat with this surprise release. It wasn't quite a lump of coal, but doesn't reach the dizzying highs he's capable of.
50
The Needle Drop

Whole Lotta Red will probably be appreciated more for its boldest ideas than its overall execution.

Beats Per Minute

Whole Lotta Red is certainly the hip-hop album of the year. What could represent 2020 better than something so grating that feels like it’s never going to end?

EDIT: SHAWN CEE CALLED THIS WEBSITE A CESSPOOL LETS GOOOO

Phew… this is my fourth attempt at this. I can now say with certainty that this album is one of the year’s most polarizing albums. Yes, I’ve rewritten this review 4 times now; first time was a meme review, second was a half-assed review I wrote at 3 AM, third was what I thought would be my final statement of the album where I gave it a ... read more

Edit: I was wrong, and so were you. Top 10 rap albums of the year. Idk, my mental illness has crippled my ability to criticise a body of work. Thank your Sir Carter for this project. Man sampled chains clinking, he sampled Bon Iver and Bach. Thanks for that, yeezy. Also some of his hardest and funniest bars to date are on here, on god. My most unpopular opinion to date.

Half of the hate that's being garnered for this album is just irrational. People are acting like Die Lit was a lyrical ... read more

I get it now. I finally, after 3 months, get this album's undeniable polarizing fun quality.

Thank you Shawn Cee, you really harassed me into liking it!

I DIDNT BUY INTO THE HYPE!!!!! I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!

I see a lot of similarities with Gunna's album - Wunna. It's something you have to turn off your brain to enjoy. Whereas Wunna was chill and psychedelic, this is incredibly hard, jarring, and hype. While Wunna was the perfect album when u chilling, vibing, or high, this is the perfect album to listen to when in a happy mood or in the car. I adore albums that are perfect for a certain situation, even when they might not be the ... read more
