People seemed to really enjoy this record, and while Dave is a very technically proficient rapper, I didn't find Pscyhodrama all that captivating.

The beats are serviceable but not very memorable, and the socio-political threads through which Dave weaves his lyrical tapestry are almost as cliché as the metaphor I just used. I applaud any rapper that attempts to tackle societal issues in their music, but Dave doesn't really put a personal spin on it, and seems content to just throw out ... read more

Edit: OKAY FUCK IT I LOVE THIS

Prelude: This might be shaping up to be the best year that UK Rap has ever seen

Review: GODDAMMIT THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A 9, BUT VOICES WAS SO GODDAMN BAD UGH

This is perhaps, the most meaningful rap release of the year so far. UK Rapper Dave absolutely pours out his heart over 11 tracks. His keen sense of wordplay and admirable storytelling abilities are the most likable features of this album. The album features this 10 minute epic of a song called Lesley ... read more

Goddamn this is fantastic. I think even people who don't like British Rap could enjoy this. Dave is a great storyteller and lyricist and he showcases that on this album. The instrumentals on this album are beautiful produced too. They make the whole psychodrama theme of the album better. AOTY so far.

FAV TRACKS: Psycho, Streatham, Black, Disaster, Screwface Capital, Lesley,

LEAST FAV TRACK: Voices

EDIT: Damn this grew off me.

EDIT 2: Okay it grew back a bit.

Not saying the album is completly devoid of highlights, but most of this feels so characterless...which is especially bad if we consider that this is a concept album about his own struggles with mental health issues...

He isn't a bad rapper and the aesthetic as well as ambition is there, but the execution resulted in a great amount of inconsistency with cliché and corny bars...his delivery is also a bit weak to me, but he compensates it with his accent tbh...

The production makes ... read more

I've never really had lyrics be the element of music that drives me to like or dislike something. You could have a song with absolutely abysmal lyrics, and as long as it's good music it's good music, even if the lyrics bring it down a tad bit. There are albums where the lyrics are a key factor in my enjoyment, albums like OK Computer, Hunky Dory, and I mean for god sake, I'm reviewing Aesop Rock's albums! Isn't he like well known FOR his lyrical abilities?

I don't ignore lyrics, I just don't ... read more

I was on the verge of tears after my first listen. "Psychodrama" is an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish! Dave spits bar after bar and every line just hooks you in! "Lesley" is the perfect example of this, telling a heartbreaking story of an abusive relationship and is easily one of the best narrative-driven tracks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Truly bad. Where do I start? The pretentious lyrics and offensively basic flow. The derivative and clean production with zero personality at all. Get this shit outta here.

Sometimes I feel really dumb when I speak about vocals in hip-hop/rap albums. That's not usually the main focus, but I'm really used to listen to music and think on it automatically. Not every song has a message, but I'll still find a way to enjoy it, even if I don't understand everything they say. With that being said, "Psychodrama" is an album that actually interested me, different from most trap rap/experimental chaos released this year. "Black" and "Purple ... read more

Although beats in this album are quite ordinary and minimalistic, I think that as a whole it is a really successful project. The most noticeable thing at the beginning is his unique accent which really helped me to get into this album. The next thing I have to say is his very intelligent and great lyrics that tell us about the rapper's experiences and what he really feels (and he had a lot to say) which also immediately encouraged me to continue listening and I really don't regret that I did it ... read more

An artist so obviously well held together, but unfortunately he falls into the biggest flaw of creating an introspective record in the hip-hop sphere. You give your deepest thoughts and bury them in bravado? your listeners are not dumb. It creates a disconnect, if you're going introspective you've got to do that and leave the cliche punch-line hooks for artists who can never reach as deep as you go as an artist.

Instrumentation, is also entry level shit, but thats understandable for a debut by ... read more

Fearless and incisive, Dave’s reportage-style tracks sketch out race, prison and abusive relationships, resulting in a landmark record.

Good

Look, this album has sexy pianos, even if his flow can occasionally be a tad sloppy, and even if some of his bars are distractingly cliche, the instrumentals are more than capable of carrying the tracks.

Best: Psycho, Black, Lesley

Weakest: Purple Heart

Dave's one hell of a lyricist and he's got bars for days. Tracks like Lesley and Psycho just pull you in and never let go. My one problem with this album is that a lot of the tracks feel very samey and Dave sounds quite preachy at points, like he's trying suuuper hard to be extremely dramatic which kinda rubbed me the wrong way. However, Dave's got a tonne of talent and I'm curious to see where he's headed.

EDIT (7/23/19): yeah sure lol. I still love this album, but GREY Area has done nothing but grow on me while the Psychodrama's once-incredible impact just dwindles on me with every listen. I still think it's a great album and will probably end up being one of my favorite rap records of the year, but it's definitely not better than GREY Area, that's for sure

original review (3/8/19): GREY Area is no longer the best grime album of 2019 (original score: 84)

Dave shows off with incredible cohesion, wordplay and lyricism on this debut album. The production is nice and mellow and Dave’s storytelling is magnificent.

There are quite a few bars on here that certainly has a strong message, but Dave's writing and flow really lacks...finesse? I think the lyrics lack subtlety or maybe a less generic delivery in order for them to have a bigger emotional impact on me, and feel less cliché or too hard-trying. And the instrumentals really doesn't help this. "Lesley" has very strong storytelling but these over the top strings and piano really makes it too obvious what this track is trying to achieve ... read more

This is the album that won a Mercury Prize?

Lately i've stopped caring about anything award related because it's obvious that the people behind it get off to hitting hard left turns no one expects. This has to be the best example of that if there was one. I just had to check this album out since it just so happened to beat out blackmidi, slowthai AND Little Simz. All amazing bodies of work front to back. While with this ... all i could say is ... really?

Strong delivery of emotion? Check. Thoughtful, heartfelt themes? Check. Good meta communication and organization? Definitely check. Surrounded by an enriching musical substance with which to take all of these strengths to a new level, as the artistic medium attempts to do? Eh, not so much.

I'm not saying this went so far as to have the premise necessarily overshadow the artistic execution, as the music was still done with care and nothing was ever offensively bad or completely ... read more

Althought this album has some intriguing and captivating storytellings, it feels lazy musically, like Dave seems to have things to say about his recent life experiences, but his music doesn't seem to reach the sense of drama he wants to spread with this LP.

I still find interesting the social issues and stress he has recently been exposed to, but the way he comunicates these messages seems to lack of vocal delivery and emotion in most of the tracks.

PD: Lesley though...

Dave is a 20-year-old talent from London in the UK, and with PSYCHODRAMA he has dropped an incredible debut album. PSYCHODRAMA plays like a kind of a cathartic therapy session, with Dave exploring issues like family, relationships, identity and life in general. The whole album is great, but be sure to check out “Lesley”, a gripping 11-minute tour-de-force that depicts an abusive relationship and its shattering fallout in harrowing detail.

In some places the hooks are bit corny and ... read more

The engagement I felt with Psychodrama despite the monotonous delivery Dave maintains throughout the release (as well as its fairly generic backing) is perhaps a testament to its one great strength: its ability to relate its auteur's lived experiences.

This album is extremely overrated. All goes well, of course, Dave's storytelling and lyricism abilities are remarkable at times on the album, but they are wobbly at times. I'm not going to say that Dave has a generic and boring flow but I almost fell asleep listening to the album. The concept is cool, but it is not executed as convincingly as it could have been. Above all, the rhythms of this album are boring and generic. They all use the same piano and this makes the songs that are not super ... read more

Dave wastes no time on Psychodrama. In the opening song he sets the tone. Some of the themes in the album opener 'Psycho' include depression, poverty and suicide, so if the album cover wasn't a hint enough, 'Psycho' firmly establishes Psychodrama as a dark and challenging hip hop album.

The production on this album is simple and hardly worth noting but that seems to be intentional. Dave knows the production is beside the point and uses it only to set a backdrop to his gorgeous prose. That's ... read more

Decent

I was in the heat of Lesley, and I finally got this album. Can't say much about it tho. This is a lyric heavy album, so it yields a sitting down and listening. I don't think you can put this on for background music. You have to be able to take in the messages and urgency in his voice. The instrumentals, though, are really generic and boring.

From the first glance, I didn't give this one too much thought. But boy, this hooked me 'till the very end.
The concept for the album is quite a great narrative trope on therapy sessions as it came back as a reflection On Dave in his debut record.

Though some songs did go pass me like Purple Heart, Location, Disaster, and Voices (I didn't like this song much).

Also, 'Lesley' is one of the greatest narrative-tracks I've heard in a VERY long time.
