Biggest disappointment of the year. How did Baroness fuck up so badly?

I tried listening to the NPR version yesterday. I got five songs in before thinking to myself that it was probably the wrong version, there's no way that this was the version Baroness put out, right? I then waited until last night until it released on Spotify. Again, I got five tracks in before excusing myself from it. 'Maybe I am just tired', I thought to myself, 'there is no way it is this bad.' And here I am now.

There ... read more

Edit: I listened to this album again to hear if they might've fixed some of the mixing problems and I think they might have. It's still really really difficult to tell because while before it felt consistently awful, now a good proportion sounds alright, just there are clear moments here that are mixed like garbage. Especially on the end of Seasons and Throw Me An Anchor. Now do I then increase the score because in some way my listening experience has improved? I'm keeping it the same and it's ... read more

"Gold & Grey" has huge, and I mean HUGE, potential to be a great metal record. But there is a glaring flaw that ruins this. I know that so many people are complaining about it, but the mixing is gawd awful! The otherwise solid instrumentation and performances are completely SWALLOWED by the obnoxiously loud drums and hi-hats and the ear-piercing amount of compression placed into most of these tracks! Even worse is that when it even attempts to be chaotic, it practically clips ... read more

GOOD

I was really, really nervous for this one. Baroness is another one of my favorite bands of all time, but I've been seeing dozens of negative reviews that are saying the mix is irredeemably bad. Like, album-ruining bad. So, considering Baroness have never released a bad album prior to this in my opinion, is Gold & Grey where they finally fuck up? Does their streak end here?

In my opinion, not really.

Okay, I definitely 100% get why the mix would ruin the album for some people. ... read more

I'm not hearing the issue with the mixing that others seem to be. I really tried to hone in on this part of the album and nothing seemed out of order. If someone can point something out to me I would love to understand the issue.

I haven't followed the sound of Baroness as intently as I could have, but I'm familiar enough with it from checking them out on occasions and having listened to their double album Yellow & Green. Overall, I think this album follows their trajectory quite well. ... read more

Just saw these guys live and it was magical.

PLEASE LET THIS ALBUM BE GOOD!!!

Review: Hmmmmmm interesting project from Baroness. Definitely my least favorite album from them, but that's not to say this is awful. There are actually a lot of tracks on here I enjoy quite a bit. There's a decent number of anthemic rock/sludge metal songs. The problem is they can't hold a candle to most of this band's previous work. And on top of that this record drags pretty bad in the second half.

It's a bit ... read more

The obvious: poor mixing

The kinda obvious: a tad bit boring

The not so obvious: if this is the version critics got and if they're tone deaf

Listen, I like Baroness, they're a fine ass band who bring a lot of ideas to the table. Those ideas are here but they're underdeveloped. Not all the songs are bad at all, actually some are quite enjoyable and heavy. Though those heavy songs are poorly mixed and the drums (especially the hi-hat and crashes) are fucking EAR PIERCING. The whole project is ... read more

This didn't fared well on first listen, such a disappointment. What a mess this was.

EDIT: Second listen - I don't feel even a slight of interest listening to this band's discography with this release. This is unbearably boring.

This album isn't bad, hell no! I think that some of these songs are quite good and well crafted but unfortunatelly it has no replay value
for me. This album does not offer anything extraordinary to me that would knock me on my knees, make me dance, give me power or at least any feelings ... I miss here ''catchy'' production, interesting vocal performances and something that would encourage me to listen to this album again. I also feel that creating 17 songs for an album is quite an weird ... read more

What happened? This is mixed like ass, and boring to tears.
And to think Baroness would do such a thing... Technically the first disturbingly huge disappointment of 2019, and it was so unlikely.

Before : ... Just why that awful mix ??? Especially when 3/4 of the tracks are great ???

After : We all make choices ... that was a choice ! I do understand the primal sludge mix ... it's just not well executated, it hurts me. Because of this mix, the majority of the tracks seems to be a mess, I cannot separate the instrumentations. And some parts are atrocious with blowing every instruments they have and making noise + saturate the prod (a good example, the end of throw me an anchor). At this ... read more

EDIT: I like to give the mix a fair argument since that seems to be the big problem for everyone
I've really tried to understand the title of this album, why Gold & Grey to close out this series? On one hand Gold could just be an Orange substitute and Grey might represent the spectrum of White to Black, but i don't think that's it. I think Gold was picked to represent the clear and precious sides of the album, whereas Grey is Silver, but dirty and tarnished by the weathering of time. With ... read more

Very confused by the division on this one, usually I agree with the listeners when albums garner critical acclaim spontaneously. Needless to say I agree with critics this time.

The 'high impact' production remains a sore point but beyond that the song writing has taken a tumble since the catchy(ish) 'Purple'.

Seems like a failed attempt to return to a more progressive approach (how many interludes?)...as well as taking a horrifically ill-judged step into ballad territory ('I'd Do Anything' and 'Cold-Blooded Angels' are both total tripe).

Sits slap bang in the 50% range - NR this time.

Oh baroness. oh no. oh lord

I'm, just confused more than anything. I've admittedly not listened to any full baroness albums, but the few songs I've heard have been amazing. I don't know how this happened.

The first track really isn't that bad honestly. The intro is completely unnecessary and is admittedly followed up by what i can only describe as a jumpscare. Seriously the volume difference from the intro to the verse is so damn big. The vocals are also mixed too low as well but other than ... read more

The bass drums sound ridiculous, it sounds like someone falling down the stairs when they're doing blastbeats or triplits and they're either too loud or too quiet... this mixing makes me want to die cause this could probably be great. I legitimately thought me headphones were breaking when the second song came on... it's that god awful.

First track is killer though, and so far only that and the interlude has impressed me

Everyone seems to hate the production of the album, but I think it envelops it in such a mystifying aura that I don't really fucking care. Baroness have reached an absolute creative peak, with several songs striking a perfect balance between heavy badassery and melodic, fuzzy heaven.

I really like this album, but my biggest nitpick from Gold & Grey isn't the sound quality but the number of tracks there are for example "Anchor's Lament" & "Throw Me an Anchor" could have easily been one track.
Fav Tracks: Borderlines, Seasons, Front Toward Enemy, Tourniquet.
Least Fav Track: Sevens

This album is marred by odd production choices. The most immediate offender is the drums with a blown-out and distorted quality that conflicts with the rest of the instruments. The vocals are similarly unrefined and echo-y, lacking distinction and catchiness. The album succeeds with its quieter tracks, but even some of these feel like they're unfocused and rely too heavily on the quirks provided by unique effects choices. It's exhausting to listen to because the listener is constantly forced to ... read more

I haven't heard the record yet as I'm revisiting the back catalogue to see if this new record is TRULY as bad as everyone claims it is. Just because critics fawn over a record doesn't mean it's automatically a bad record sheesh. And if this is your first introduction to Baroness PLEASE do yourself a favour and listen to Blue or Purple. Pristine melodic sludge records and you are honestly doing yourself a disservice if you write off this band just because of a supposed poor mixing issue on their ... read more

There is absolutely no excuse for sound this terrible in 2019. The mix completely ruined what could have been their best work.

Disappointing, not understanding where the critics are going with the huge ratings. Its a very weak and boring album

It was a nice listen throughout, top 15 of the year for sure. I'm not a fan of the production myself but that doesn't fully hold it back from being a good record.

Regardless of what's going on with the mixing (I personally don't see it as too much of a problem, I feel like it has to be on purpose), I just can't really get into this album. Sure it does have some pretty strong points that I do enjoy, but as an overall experience it just doesn't captivate me. Practically everything on here sounds underwhelming for me most of the time.

With that being said though, I do think these guys would be really impressive live, I just can't vibe to it in album form ... read more

After some of the teaser tracks, I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be as good as Purple. After listening to it though, I was right. It is even better.

Baroness have created something of epic scale that is very melodic with HEAVY production, and serves as their magnum-opus.

Are we listening to the same versions as the critics?
'Purple' sounds so pristine in comparison to what is so far released to the public from 'Gold & Grey'.
