The Needle Drop

Flume's full-length followup to 2016's Skin takes a very welcome turn for the experimental.

Hi This Is Flume is, both philosophically and sonically, an inflection point. Seventeen cohesive tracks nudge the needle on Streten’s sound, with frequent jump cuts from dismantled clubby beats to pogo-inducing drops and thick bass, while generally keeping his gifts for emotive melodies in the foreground.

Resident Advisor

Coming from an artist who struck oil by digging firmly in the middle ground, Hi This Is Flume is a welcome step towards somewhere less comfortable.

Make no mistake, Hi This Is Flume is a great listen, but outside of the aforementioned rap collaborations, the mixtape struggles to feel especially fresh.

There's nothing BAD on this album, but there's really nothing innovative about this album. Maybe this is good to someone who hasn't heard future bass before, but this doesn't strike me as special. Maybe it'll take a couple more listens for me to get it, but right now, it's just alright.

Still a better electronic album than Hyperion.

Peggy and SOPHIE deserve to get praise, but slowthai's track is the best on this mixtape. Gonna be the next big UK rapper.

Edit: oh, who was right? Isn't so much of a bold prediction, but I'll take it.

Holy crap... It's honestly crazy how you can make music that's wonky, glitched out and all over the place and make it sound freaking awesome, and that's what Flume does on this mixtape. I must be a sucker for this stuff cause even if the sound gets repetitive it doesn't take away from the experience in any way in my opinion. And yes the SOPHIE influence is massive (even though she does have production credits on this mixtape ... read more
Considering that this mixtape got me into experimental music as a whole, I think it deserves a more complete review.
Flume's "Hi This Is Flume" is a massive shift for Australian electronic producer Flume, as before this, he made quite good but mildly standard and not very experimental dance-pop and electro-pop. However, this project, which was released unexpectedly, is much wonkier, with off-beat drums, somewhat abrasive chords, and features from less ... read more
Boy oh boy have I been waiting for this! This to me is a very special project and moment in my journey of music listening. The first album that I Iistened to was Skin by Flume. Skin is important to me, since that album I got hooked on album listening; and here I am three years later and hundred upon hundred of albums later. It's almost a weird coincidence for me that I listened to his whole discography just one day before he announced this mixtape, it only makes it that more special for ... read more
