Flume's full-length followup to 2016's Skin takes a very welcome turn for the experimental.
Hi This Is Flume is, both philosophically and sonically, an inflection point. Seventeen cohesive tracks nudge the needle on Streten’s sound, with frequent jump cuts from dismantled clubby beats to pogo-inducing drops and thick bass, while generally keeping his gifts for emotive melodies in the foreground.
Coming from an artist who struck oil by digging firmly in the middle ground, Hi This Is Flume is a welcome step towards somewhere less comfortable.
Make no mistake, Hi This Is Flume is a great listen, but outside of the aforementioned rap collaborations, the mixtape struggles to feel especially fresh.
