This is straight up a case of this not really being my thing. Brain Salad Surgery is very technically competent with sound performances, but this just isn't the type of sound I really fuck with personally. I can fully understand why somebody whose more of a proghead with fall in love with this record though. Take this rating as more of a "this isn't in her lane" as opposed to "oh this is legitimately mid".

Like most albums I listen to, I really like the stupid shit. Here we have some great dumb stuff in the form of songs like "Benny the Boxer" and other songs that have this fun "prog rock meets ragtime" feel. The playing here is not only technically impressive, but it's fun playful spirit is infectious.

The problem is everything before Benny, kinda sucks. "Tocota" is experimental music gone wrong, with it's "let's see if this works." feel that I can't ... read more

All starting with a grandiose but satirically purposeful performance of the old English poem “Jerusalem”, Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s brilliantly crafted and masterfully executed record “Brain Salad Surgery” is more than just another album from the group. It’s a social statement, representation, and snapshot of the time it was recorded. Some may say that it’s a warning, too.
