Anyone else notice how there isn't a single cymbal on this entire project? That's right, he wanted this album to have an African drum beat feel, and, as African music rarely used cymbals back then, he nails this sound! With the explanation of a detail like that, one can see how attentive Gabriel was to detail on this record. If a sound wasn't to his standard of perfect, he would change it completely.

While his first album was inconsistent quality-wise (some great standout moments and some not so great moments), and his second was, in contrast, consistently mediocre, Peter Gabriel's third effort falls somewhere in the middle for me. There's less great songs than on Car, but also less throwaway fillers than on Scratch.
