The Needle Drop

The Radio Dept.'s third album is an immaculate display of dreamy pop prowess.

Despite having been together, in one incarnation or another, since the mid-'90s, this - surprisingly - is only the third album proper by the well-respected outfit from Lund, The Radio Dept.

The current and established line-up is founder member Johan Duncanson on guitar and vocals, longtime collaborator Martin Carlberg on guitar and Daniel Tjäder on keyboards. With it currently being something of a musical

and critical golden age for all things Swedish, these veterans would seem well-placed to reassert their prominence among their compatriots.

Thanks to @Nautalcrtzsm64 for recommending this album to me a while back. Sorry again for the delay in listening to it.

The instrumentation is dreamlike & uplifting and just screams nostalgic to me for some reason.

It's a short 34min journey through ... read more

Clinging to a Scheme certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel but it knows what it is and its playing into that and I respect the hell out of it for that. Production here is the highlight for me. If you are searching for an album where you can just lay back for an easy listening give this one a try and let your mind wander a bit.

'Clinging to a Scheme' is a short, but adventurous indie dream pop record covered in a monochromatic sheen. What makes this album really shine are it's delicate use of diverse instrumentals. May it be the horns that flavor "Heaven's on Fire" or the stabbing disco strings on "Never Follow Suit", The Radio Dept. knows how to add just a little bit of spice into the already well-formulated indie sound.

There's nothing extraordinary or grand about this album, it's just good indie. It's really nice to just put on and vibe to it, and it's this simplicity that makes it shine.
