After following Heidecker for the majority of my life, its been a pleasure to see him transition from.comedian to a more serious actor and now musician. Hearing the development of his sound across In Glendale to his anti-Trump songs, and now to this, reveals a man constantly expressing his endless creativity.

On What The Broken Hearted Do, Heidecker explores a faux split between himself and his wife and delivers tracks inspired by these pretend feelings of heartbreak and loss. Clearly ... read more
Inspired by an faux divorce/break-up, this new effort from the comedian-turned musician Tim Heidecker is an immensely satisfying listen with the lending hand on production of Jonathan Rado (Foxygen) and a lacerating sentiment seeping with heartbreak and emotional sincerity. He really had gone Randy Newman/Warren Zevon in this record.
Comedian Tim Heidecker impresses with an acceptable and warm piano rock album. What The Brokenhearted Do... is a venture into more serious territory for the Tim and Eric absurdist humorist, but he nails some pretty sweet jackpots.

It was always going to be hard to approach this album with any sort of detachment - you either know/get Heidecker or you don’t - but there is genuinely a fair amount to enjoy here. Whether you buy into the irony or take the tracks purely at face level, sure it might not be a game changer but all of the cliches just feel completely appropriate and in keeping with what I think I know about the man.
There's nothing inherently wrong with this album, but I hate to say that there isn't much that is memorable on it. I think that I'll put this album on in the background for something that's pleasant to hear, but I won't be going out of my way to listen to this again in the future.

I give this album 5 bags of popcorn and 2 bags of cold coffee.
