This did not live up to the incredible album art nor Peggy Gou's formidable talent. I guess what was a little confusing for me is it didn't give me a better insight into Gou's influences. Many of her best songs feel like exciting new explorations of house music that play with transcontinental electronic bops. It is not that this DJ-Kicks project is necessarily bad; in fact, there are many moments that I actually quite liked and found pretty groovy (I'm looking at you Shade of Rhythm.) Not nearly as enticing as Peggy Gou's long string of EP's we've seen so far, Peggy Gou's handling of the DJ-Kicks mantle feels at times bloated, other times like it's struggling to find its own groove. As far as making a case for her diverse influences, many of which I feel shine much brighter in the context of her EP work, Gou doesn't do the most interesting things with them to keep the listener engaged throughout her mix. Man I really wanted to like this; I'm a big cheerleader of both the Once and Moment EPs, and sure enough, Peggy's original songs on here are great. But the rest of the mix leaves a lot to be desired. A DJ-Mix that over packed and fails to emit a major purpose. The list of EPs stringing together after this long awaited project feel like they've given inflated expectations. The tracks that truly do pack that punch will give you a Tarantino-esque flare. Again though, the album has with it too many faces to truly get a good enough knowledge as to what it's ultimately trying to go for.
Why so low rated Peggy Gou fucking boss bitch
