Driven by off-kilter fiddles, a bizarre sense of humor, and punk-inflected country-rock, 16 Horsepower's first full-length album, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes, is a weirdly captivating listen.

In small doses, 16 Horsepower’s twisted, minor-key electric banjo and slide-guitar-driven cowboy blues have a violent, quirky power — Sackcloth ‘n’ Ashes is Marty Robbins or Son Volt as imagined by Quentin Tarantino.

Witness swathes of braces-plucking banjo that make pivotal scenes in Deliverance seem like a night out in Camden, while the Deep South atmosphere is at times so over-pronounced you can almost hear someone, way out in the backwoods, squealing like a pig.

This album has made me rethink my opinion on country music entirely. Thanks rater_ratings for suggesting this album to me

Country music but in a minor key. All the instruments create something great that they really shouldn’t be capable of creating. All the songs are beautiful and include gentle strums from a fiddle and banjo to create a moody, unsettling atmosphere. The melodies are infectious and kept me interested throughout the entire album. The religious themes and Ian Curtis reminiscent vocals are very interesting and fitting as well.

It ticks so many boxes which i love, interesting themes and lyrics, a heavier emphasis on atmosphere and great vocal work all of ... read more

So one day, record player breaks down at the record and we're basically convicted to playing CD's. No big deal, we found some gems. have a good time. At one point, my co-worker pulls out this album, albeit with the EU cover art, which i kinda prefer over this picture of a guy with the chicken. But anyway, from the first song on, it's clear that this is something special. Tom Wait and Nick Cave had a bastard child that likes folk and country music and it began its own band. Behold, 16 Horsepower ... read more

This Alt/Gothic Country album really works with setting the mood. It takes you back to the dark ages of the Western times like no other album.
