Driven by off-kilter fiddles, a bizarre sense of humor, and punk-inflected country-rock, 16 Horsepower's first full-length album, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes, is a weirdly captivating listen.
In small doses, 16 Horsepower’s twisted, minor-key electric banjo and slide-guitar-driven cowboy blues have a violent, quirky power — Sackcloth ‘n’ Ashes is Marty Robbins or Son Volt as imagined by Quentin Tarantino.

Country music but in a minor key. All the instruments create something great that they really shouldn’t be capable of creating. All the songs are beautiful and include gentle strums from a fiddle and banjo to create a moody, unsettling atmosphere. The melodies are infectious and kept me interested throughout the entire album. The religious themes and Ian Curtis reminiscent vocals are very interesting and fitting as well.
With great instrumentals which create dark almost sinister like atmosphere with heavy religious undertones within the lyrics which painted the whole album bleak within the atmosphere it created and with vocal work which reminds a lot of Ian Curtis from Joy Division but just more country (might just be me), it is obvious to see why I love this record and this band. So one day, record player breaks down at the record and we're basically convicted to playing CD's. No big deal, we found some gems. have a good time. At one point, my co-worker pulls out this album, albeit with the EU cover art, which i kinda prefer over this picture of a guy with the chicken. This Alt/Gothic Country album really works with setting the mood. It takes you back to the dark ages of the Western times like no other album.
