Forget comparisons to Billie or Chaka — that craggy-yet-smooth croon is Erykah Badu’s own.

AllMusic

If Worldwide Underground isn't to be taken as seriously as Baduizm and Mama's Gun, so be it; but it only goes to show how apprehensive the powers that be are in allowing their platinum artists to deviate from what's expected.

Pitchfork

Opening the music up and just letting the tape unfurl catches moments unattained otherwise, but as it stands, Worldwide Underground could use some tightening up.

Uncut
Though it features 12 tracks and lasts an hour, Badu’s latest comes billed as an EP, presumably by a label unwilling to market this as a priority release. Her honeyed brand of soul has always focused more on grooves than tunes, and here she does away with the latter almost entirely.

Rolling Stone
Most promisingly, Badu updates last year's hit "Love of My Life" — in a nod to Sequence's femme-rap classic "Funk You Up" — with verses from Queen Latifah, Angie Stone and Bahamadia. The rest just goes on and on.
