Schlagenheim is beyond weird. Schlagenheim is a legitimate one of a kind record. Schlagenheim is a masterpiece.
Schlagenheim will open up a whole new bottle of weird, if you let it in.
black midi have created something powerful and individualistic through their upheavals, and as for where they go from here, the sky is absolutely the limit.
‘Schlagenheim’ is an adventure through ever-changing noise and evolving, textured soundscapes.
Pining for some rigid label is futile, because it's one of the most unique rock records released this year and maybe of the past five years.
black midi are playful, silly, provocative and aggressive, all while maintaining a free-spirited, lackadaisical air that becomes further entwined into their narrative by their reliance on improvisatory passages and jamming.
Schlagenheim is in turns explosive and subdued (mostly explosive), an energetic, challenging listen start to finish.
The London guitar band’s debut is twitchy, hair-raising, always on the move. They harken back to a more esoteric era of indie with a magnetic and dazzling style.
Schlagenheim possesses a genuine sense of experimentalism – just for the wonderment of creating something that feels new, rather than simply for the sake of it.
Right out of the gate, black midi has crafted one of the decade's most creative rock albums.
Parts of Schlagenheim will connect immediately, but you have to give it time and spins for it all to fall into place. It’s not always a comfortable listen and it won’t be for everyone but it’s exciting to see where they’ll go next.
An arresting, astonishing experience, ‘Schlagenheim’ is a vital, stunning, puzzling album, one that demands to be heard.
With nods to King Crimson, Talking Heads, Death Grips, and many others, London’s Black Midi creates a unique brand of cathartic punishment on their excellent debut.
It does little to dispel any of the mystery that surrounds the band, even while proving them worthy of the praise they've received across the pond.
As a first chapter, Schlagenheim crackles with the same excitement as ground breaking records that came before it did when expanding the known boundaries of experimental sounds.

black midi aim to dazzle and perform, and with Schlagenheim, their mammoth ideations never cease to thrill, the product of a boundless creative spirit and unwavering technicality.
Schlagenheim, the London post-punk quartet's debut, spins in all directions and without any warning, executed with youthful, frenetic energy.
Schlagenehim is an impressive, protean, raucous debut that grabs listeners by their shirt-collars and drags them along for the ride.
As a whole, Schlagenheim is an imperfect, intriguing debut: behind the overheated prose lurks a young, self-conscious band who clearly aren’t as fully formed as the hype suggests.
Technically proficient but emotionally shallow, Schlagenheim too often feels like feeding all mathcore and post-punk into a neural network and releasing the result.
Oh.
My.
Fucking.
God.
Listen to this album please. For the love of GOD listen to this record. Thanks.
...Your wanting a review longer then that huh?
Ok, so, for context, I had no idea who or what black midi was going into this project. I had no idea what sound they had, who was in the band, or any knowledge of the album going into this record. All I vaguely knew was that it's described as post-punk, but that could mean 15 different things to 30 different people.
So what exactly DID black ... read more
This album feels like an epic journey through a fantastical realm.
Every song is so unique and different and each song could really stand alone as an amazing piece of music.
Does anyone else think this felt kind of like Led Zeppelin at times? Reminded me of LZ4.
Western is easily one of my top songs on the year so far!
Unhinged brilliance!
Schlagenheim is the debut studio album from English rock band Black Midi, released in June 2019. It was recorded at Mr. Dan's Studio in London over a 5-day period in November 2018.
During recording, the band made the conscious decision not to replicate their live set, embellishing their four-piece set up with synthesizers, sequences, drum machines, banjos & organs.
Lead vocalist & guitarist Geordie Greep initially wanted to call the album Hellfire, which ... read more
