Oh.

My.

Fucking.

God.

Listen to this album please. For the love of GOD listen to this record. Thanks.

...Your wanting a review longer then that huh?

Ok, so, for context, I had no idea who or what black midi was going into this project. I had no idea what sound they had, who was in the band, or any knowledge of the album going into this record. All I vaguely knew was that it's described as post-punk, but that could mean 15 different things to 30 different people.

So what exactly DID black ... read more

MY COLD CANADIAN ASS GOT REPEATEDLY POUNDED ON BY BRITISH DUDES FOR 43 MINUTES STRAIGHT.

Wow, I am very impressed with this debut, it's definitely one of the most distinct records I've heard all year! Black midi delivers a collection of very intriguing math rock songs that are not only creative in sound and takes promising risks, but showcases some of the most enjoyable, fun collections of distinct songs I've heard thus far in 2019!

You either love it or you hate it. When it comes down to ... read more

Schlagenheim is the highly anticipated debut album by Black Midi, a math rock band hailing from Croydon, London (which I was actually born in btw). Their hype has mostly been generated through their live performances uploaded on to the internet, making them already gain somewhat of a cult following.

Now, what I will say is that while I was still very much on the Black Midi hype train, I can't say I was extremely impressed by their previous singles, at least not as much as the hardcore fans, ... read more

edit 5: ok lets not get TOO carried away

edit 4: saw them live. fuck it, lets bump it to 100, WOOOOOOOO

edit 3: its been three weeks ish and i have listened to this album every day since release some times multiple times a day and man this just gets even better and better. I truly believe this album is one of the best this decade and i'm so excited for the future of black MIDI, these guys just have it and they are barely out of their teens. it is fucking mindblowing. Just that kinda band that ... read more

As a musician who's trying to perfect his own sound, there is that one recent release that becomes the perfect component. There's Danny Brown's "Atrocity Exhibition", The Voidz' "Virtue", Daughters' "You Won't Get What You Want"... and then there's black midi's "Schlagenheim". Ho-ly fuck.

This record has EVERYTHING I was looking for! All three vocalists have the charisma, energy and eccentricity to fit in with the noisy wall of sound! The math ... read more

This album feels like an epic journey through a fantastical realm.

Every song is so unique and different and each song could really stand alone as an amazing piece of music.

Does anyone else think this felt kind of like Led Zeppelin at times? Reminded me of LZ4.

Western is easily one of my top songs on the year so far!

Fugazi, Unwound, Pere Ubu, Battles, Floyd, Crimson, Slint, Daughters, Mogwai, Can, This Heat,
Captain Beefheart, Talking Heads, and on and on and on...

These Croydon dwellers have a neat record collection as you can see.

A couple of songs towards the end go too close to Mr Bungle-esque 'twisted carnival' territory is the only complaint - though that description is likely to be a major selling point for some.

The first time I saw Black Midi's name was when I was seeing the bands who are coming to a portuguese music festival called Paredes de Coura, which, by the way, is probably our best festival and I wanna go really bad but I unfortunateIy can't and that pisses me off. Ugh whatever.
Then I watched their KEXP performance and I really enjoyed their sound and instantly became interested in the band, which made me feel really hyped when I heard they were going to be releasing an album (Rough Trade ... read more

black midi is not just a hype, for several months, I promise a bright future for this new English band. The four musicians have risen with ridiculous ease to the rank of the most exciting band of the UK underground scene, claiming their outsider status by an incredible stage presence. Everything starts with a live recorded in the studios of the KEXP radio. They become the ones we expect, they intrigue the specialized press and remain however in a virtual silence. And after months of waiting, ... read more

EDIT: After about a month of this album and multiple listens it's safe to say that this is my favorite rock album of the decade and year. Pure bliss.

As a debut this is brilliant

As an album its pulverizing

I saw this project making its rounds along here this morning and I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about...

AND BOY HOOPLA HOOPLA THIS IS FUCKING NUTS!
It's hard really to say what makes this album so immersive and intense...aside from the brutal and oddly timed performances. ... read more

Edit: I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. But god damn. This is Hyperactive Slint-esque. Stumbled upon these guys last March and been a fan ever since. If you all have the time, go see their live performances and it might change your mind. I would have given a 100 it's just they did not include Talking Heads and Crow's Perch which i think is more fitting than Speedway.

Looking forward for what's next for these young lads. 🙌

IT LIVED UP TO THE HYPE!!!!

This is gonna for sure be one of my favorite rock albums of the year. black midi conjured up a bizarre thrill ride that is consistently a mixture of catchy and unsettling. This album in a way reminds me a bit of Thin Black Duke or A Laughing Death in Meatspace with how weird and unnerving it is.

953 starts the album of SO strong with some insanely fun riffing that gets crazier as the track goes on. Speedway grew on me a ton with subsequent listens- I love the ... read more

EDIT: It's a grower.

Just not a fan. Starts off at breakneck speeds with some of that raw brutal M A T H but didnt keep my attention as it petered off for two tracks and became milquetoast background noise. The foruth track explodes into more of a direction im personally a fan of towards the end but then just...stops and cuts into this weird acoustic arrangement? Don't get it. Then they finally comeback with another brutal math loop with some pretty vocals that fumble around and the track ... read more

Definitely a record of interesting nature, heavy yet unpredictable but not something I would return at second listen. They lack something I couldn't figure out and also, not a fan of the sluggish vocals. Not going to jump on the hype train for this one.

Decent

Every time I go into a new album, I try to stay completely unbiased, and try to understand others’ opinions beforehand. On ‘schlagenheim’, with all honesty, I was just waiting for it to end.

The production on the instruments is noisy as ever, and there’s never a dull moment. However, the lead vocalist seems buried. My problem is that I want him to be buried even more. I love progressive rock of the 70s, with those zany and off-the-wall vocal inflections, but on ... read more

Angelic 2 the Core is better than this shit. This sounds like Rough Trade took some dumb cunts from an insane asylum and gave them some instruments and a microphone. This Greep dude sounds like dying Elder Scrolls Oblivion NPC. I see some heavy payola with these critic scores. These riffs are so fucking boring. This album is making me believe that embalming a guitar is possible.

This is why I love music. Every so often I find something that really blows me away. Something so amazing that it makes me question if I've found a new favourite genre; a new favourite artist; maybe even a new favourite album. And at the moment, that album is black midi's schlagenheim. While I ultimately decided that this wasn't my new favourite album (obviously) - hell, it isn't even my favourite album of the decade - it's still my current album of the year. The boys did it. They actually delivered this conundrum of an record for the accusatory & skeptics alike. Wouldn't it be great if most "industry plants" brought out the same level of ambitious zest?

Schlagenheim acts as this hodgepodge that stems from various evident influences. An over-the-top flamboyant showcase of flashy riffing & near-virtuosic drumwork that manages to shape up into a bohemian force. I feel like this debut in particular is one that'll raise an eyebrow of ... read more

I already loved this record but after listening again I only loved it more. Schlagenhiem described by Paste is apparently a one of a kind record, which yeah it is. Nearly every song on here impressed me so much and by the end got me wanting more. I feel like every track on here is incredibly unique and that's because nothing's consistent, I literally had no clue what to expect not only on my first listen but also my second one for some reason but that was part of the fun.

I understand the appeal, this is certainly a promising debut. My 20 YO self would insist on seeing this band life. Its just that for me there is too much math in the rock, songs are a little too reliant on signature changes, the band is a little too showy, a little too difficult for my speed. I like speedway and reggae alright though, good songs. I like the opening and closing of Western, its just all the additional places it goes. Schlagenheim is one of the first 2019 albums that got me really excited for it's creativity and freshness. This first half of this year has really been nowhere near as good as last year, at least in terms of rock/punk music, and I was already getting really thirsty for new good albums.
I found the songs here to be very captivating, sometimes intense, sometimes atmospheric, all of which make this a good collection of tracks.

WOOOWWW this was even better than I expected! I knew black midi were something special when I first discovered them and their debut definitely shows that. I'm so happy that these guys delivered my album of the year!

Anyways, what makes black midi so special? On the surface, they seem like a cool underground band trying to make a name. But genre-wise, they're incredibly hard to define. Their music is to jazzy to be rock, but too rock to be jazz. It's too ... read more

This album surprised me very positively and i can understand now why it receives such a positive review from both critics and ordinary listeners. It's just great. I'm always impressed with this kind of music, because although at first glance it's a pure haos, when I go deep into it, from this haos emerges an incredibly well organized and beautiful music. While parts of this album are exceptional, I still think the boys have some finessing to do. This album proved to me that they are outstanding song crafters bursting at the seams with creativity. I really loved how many directions this album pulled me in, and I am super excited to see them live soon! I didn't feel as engaged as I would have liked and felt like some of the ideas weren't fully realized. An excellent take on modern math rock , presented in an easily palatable manner (to some extent)... Schlagenheim is a powerhouse of a project, providing listeners with a very direct, yet subtly complex listen, with very crisp sound quality, and just the right amount of avant-garde improvisation.

It's been a while since we've been blessed with such a solid, consistent, and musicianship-centric rock album of such immense power. This album is an instant classic for me. From start to finish, this ... read more

I already heard the first seconds of this album, I already knew that I would like it very much. In a measure experimental, not too far, elements the noise is nicely distributed and not cut the ear, eccentric, schizophrenic, and overall a great and unusual noise / math rock mixed with post hardcore. Listen to it, now!

A derivative noise rock album, all the conclusion I have been through the album is, this is maybe a noise rock or post punk album, but they mix it well, but as an album the result is quite absurd and lack of substance.
The opening is track is quirky and most interesting song of the album, all the through they didn't execute the album, the vocals are bland and mediocre it annoying and unbearable. The forms and beat changes randomly is laughable, there is no meaning of it and it's cringey, you ... read more

It’s albums like this that just come out of nowhere to surprise you. A few months ago I heard the single “Talking Heads” and I loved it but nothing could have prepared me for the insanity of this album. Black Midi is that band that despite one short KEXP live session essentially had no material and yet here they are on their debut delivering one of the best albums of the decade. “Schlagenheim” brings to mind similarities to some of my favorite bands. I certainly do understand the hype around this album. It's unique and varied soundscapes are very interesting and could be considered masterful. However I didn't find myself able to enjoy the album. In fact I found it irritating in places though not overly and that's not the reason for the low(ish) rating.

This is an album that I can appreciate but unfortunately do not enjoy.
