Deep Purple's final release with their Mark I lineup ultimately ends up being this lineups weakest album.

When I say this is the weakest Mark I album, I don't mean that this album is bad. As you can tell from the score, this is actually a really good album. But when compared to Shades Of Deep Purple and Book Of Taliesyn, this album does feel underwhelming. Deep Purple's self-titled release manages to both be more of the same and its own thing at the same time.

The third album of Deep Purple's 60s psychedelic rock trilogy feels like an improvement upon The Book Of Taliesyn, mostly due to the fact that there's more than a single fantastic song on the album, as the band is in their top shape over here, featuring a wide range of emotions and musical expressions, even though I might have to say that some of the mindless jams over at the second half of the album still aren't something I've got properly used to. This is a nice n heavy sound from them, on the more garage side for the prog movement, and one of their best outside of Machine Head, and much more loose than that record.
