Like the three records before it, Christmas Island is great. But it's great in a different way. Despite having much more subtle and absurd lyrics than previously heard, this record somehow feels like the most personal and somber thing they've ever done, especially in songs such as Best Friend, Angel of Death, I Wanna Rock Out In My Dreams, Getting Naked and Playing With Guns, and of course Linda Ronstadt. It can be hard to kind of push through all the strange metaphors Sean uses on this one but ... read more
This album just clicks with me. All the "bad" songs that people say are on this album I absolutely adore. It gets better with each listen. Ugh, thanks AJJ.
Great album: B+

Best Tracks: Children of God; Do, Re, and Me; Coffin Dance; Getting Naked, Playing with Guns; I wanna Rock Out in My Dreams; Linda Ronstadt; Temple Grandin Too
Worst Tracks: Best Friend; Deathlessness

My favorite album of 2014. I can see why some people don't like the direction AJJ has taken their sound, but I happen to really love it. There are excellent songs that demand to be sung-along to, the musicianship is solid and interesting, and the lyrics are quirky, emotional, and often hilarious. Christmas Island is almost perfect, save a few rough parts on the album. One of my favorites of all time.

Favorite Tracks: Temple Grandin, Children of God, Kokopelli Face Tattoo, Linda Ronstadt
