In 1000 Forms Of Fear, we have what is probably Sia’s finest body of work.

Consequence of Sound

She’s all over the place because her writing is strong enough to let her dabble in every tide pool, and the cross-pollination just strengthens the album’s heart.

Time Out London

‘1000 Forms of Fear’ isn’t a string of Number Ones; it’s more dialled down than that, less obvious, a little deeper, and sometimes middlingly generic.

One would be tempted to say this comes off as a glorified demo project, but that doesn't do Sia's songwriting and singer abilities proper justice.

On 1000 Forms of Fear, it's clear that her time as a hitmaker for others not only brought her quirks into the mainstream, but also made the songs she kept for herself catchier.

Listening to 1000 Forms Of Fear, you can hear how strong Furler's influence is on the pop stars with whom she works.

The occasional filler that clutters 1000 Forms of Fear prevents it from really lifting off as a cohesive piece, but as mainstream pop albums go, there are few as well-crafted or executed as Furler has delivered here.

Rolling Stone

Her knack for heart-swelling choruses shines through on a set of tracks you might play while winning a marathon

The Line of Best Fit

1000 Forms of Fear is a anguished pop album for our uncertain times, crafted by an artist who is conflicted and torn by her celebrity as well as her vulnerable heart.

It’s an album that acts as if simply existing was success enough. Yes, it is successful in this light, but it could have still tried to be more.

Pretty Much Amazing

It finds Furler in stark, naked view. But I can’t muster more than a nod of admiration. Sia deserves a crowning accomplishment to match her phenomenal talent and remarkable story.

The 405

1000 Forms of Fear is a massive disappointment based on Sia's previous songwriting credentials and the strength of 'Chandelier'

Drowned in Sound

Sia’s become a victim of her own ubiquity and doesn't have the force of personality to persuade you otherwise.

A.V. Club

Perhaps because she’s been so immersed in writing songs for other people, the distinctive edges of her singing voice and music feel largely subsumed by external influences and validation.

In the early 2010’s, Sia’s career trajectory took an interesting turn. While she had already established herself as an indie singer-songwriter with a decade’s worth of music under her belt, she suddenly began featuring on songs by David Guetta and writing songs for Rihanna, showing her slow transformation to a more mainstream pop force. In 2014, she returned to the spotlight with a new look (or perhaps more accurately, a lack thereof) and a much poppier sound, on her album ... read more
To be upfront about it, my biggest complaint with this album is how misused Chandelier is. It's a beautiful song about vulnerability and Sia's drinking problems; but so many commercials and advertisers hear it and think "oh the first word is party therefore its a happy party song lets play it over people being happy and partying". Basically, it's a sad song used way too often in a happy context.

Sia's singing and songwriting is what makes this album special. While there may not be a ... read more
I can't believe I never paid enough attention to the lyrics of "Chandelier." It's one of those deceptively sad songs like Outkast's "Hey Ya" and "Hard Times" by Paramore.
Her vulnerability in her voice accompanied by her ability to turn broken-hearted lyrics about alcoholism, drug addiction, and abusive relationships into fist-pumping pop hooks (“You went straight for the knife/And I prepared to die/Your blade, it shines/Looked me straight in the eyes”) are 1000 Forms of Fear’s highlights. However, my reoccurring issue with its producer, Greg Kurstin, is his often extraordinarily unextraordinary production, making each song sound like a rehash ... read more
