It was going to be hard for Agalloch to follow up on The Mantle, one of the best metal release of the early 2000;s but they returned in 2006 with Ashes Against The Grain focus more on Post-Metal sound of their previous release with elements of Drone, Dark Folk and Black Metal to create an hour long epic through the cold depths of winter. For my first listen to Agalloch I had no idea what I was getting into, and quite interestingly it defied all of my usual expectations for a "metal" album.

For one, Agalloch feels decidedly less "metal" than their contemporaries (while still utilizing a black metal-esque vocal delivery for a majority of the time) over folk metal instrumentation. The american metalheads Agalloch return with a great effort after a series of excellent releases under their name. Ashes Against the Grain is yet another powerful work from the band, who manages to craft a very vivid and cinematic sound that compliments all of the concepts on the record. Listening to this is pretty much impossible to stay untouched by the intimidating vocals or the cold and deafening lyrics, or even the incredibly arranged instrumental work. Deep down, when push comes to shove, this is really just a post-rock album - one that happens to have a few folk and black metal baubles adorning it is all.

There’s nothing wrong with that but you’ll have to deliver something truly phenomenal to impress me within the genre of post-rock.
