Before Ashes Against the Grain, the black-metal newcomers from Agalloch had already delivered a powerful album that helped set them side by side with some of the greatest names of the genre's past generation. The Mantle is also a concept album with a strong and vivid narrative behind it, and even though it sounds way different from the sound proposed on their next masterpiece, there is a lot here that reflects upon the band's identity and artistic vision.
