So, I’m going to keep this short since I don’t have much to say about it. I liked it. This was an album that I was not at familiar with at all before checking it out. Black metal artists incorporating elements of ambient into their works isn't uncommon. Most good black metal outfits do this on most of their releases in order to create an effective atmosphere and not just sound like the usual raw heaviness for the sake of raw heaviness that a ton of other black metal artists cling to. However, something you don't see everyday is a black metal artist ditching the distorted, down-tuned instruments and making a straight-up ambient album.

Most of the time black metal artist aren't good at all when they incursion into doing other stuff away from what they're accustomed, and the horrible dungeon synth works that Burzum dropped while Varg was in prison are quite a prime example of that. However, homeboy Wintherr doesn't give a single shit and released Die Festung, an album that shines by its own merits among the atmosblack behemoths he has done over the years.
