Tiny Mix Tapes

This is one of the albums of the year: completely out of left field and completely solid from start to finish.

No Ripcord

The fact that all this noise comes from three guys is pretty phenomenal. Some of the songs are so chaotic that they sound like the wheels are about to fall off at any second, and the beauty is how close the band decides to tow that line.

The First Menomena Album, or I am the Fun Blame Monster, is a piece of studied, original genius, through and through.

Suffice to say, Menomena are a hugely creative band, and with I Am the Fun Blame Monster, they've managed to make an album that's extremely accessible yet entirely unconventional.

Under the Radar
While the production techniques are so ingenious as to occasionally outshine the melodic content of the songs themselves, these are first and foremost pop songs.

Menomena clearly thinks of itself as a clever bunch of musicians. Maybe next time around they'll be more interested in sharing their wit with their listeners rather than just alluding to it.

If you are a Radiohead fan, I would strongly recommend this album, especially the track "Monkey's Back". But also if you like stuff like Modest Mouse, Dismemberment Plan, Flaming Lips, Fiery Furnaces, TV on the Radio, Frog Eyes, etc. you shouldn't miss this. While I think "The Monkey's Back" is probably the highlight of the album, and one of the best closing tracks ever, there are other fantastic highlights like "Cough Coughing", "Strongest Man in the ... read more

Damn this album packs in a bit of everything.

That it also remains cohesive and consistently rewarding is the clincher - excellent.

the first menomena album, on the first listen, left me amazed. the soft sounding production and vocals show menomena as an amazing band. now, i feel comfortable to say that this album is one of the greats, and wildly underrated. highlights can include an amazing drum work on "cough coughing", the mysterious guitar on the fantastic song "e. is stable", and "trigga hiccups", which has the most energy on this album, but is careful not to push it past it's limit.

I Am the Fun Blame Monster! feels like Tortoise combined with experimental rock and art rock. These songs are complicated but at the same time feel skeletal. It is a fun listen even if I'm not crazy for it.
