These guys are like AJR except with actual heart and charm to them.

A big problem with Christian music has been that it focuses SPECIFICALLY on lyrical content. I can understand people who say they hate it for the fact that it always feels like its themes are being shoved down your throat, but personally, that's never really bothered me. My problem with Christian music, within the last 10 years especially, is that they don't seem like they really care about the music at all. They just try to ... read more

this is the best christian rock record ever

I'm not a religious person, so religious themes in music usually isolate me a lot. That being said, this record does religion right. It doesn't shove some lifestyle down your throat, it slowly feeds you it's struggles, hardships, missteps, acceptance and other things that come with being religious beautifully. The production on this record is absolutely phenomenal across the board, though sometimes being a little too weird for it's own good. I loved ... read more

I found the singles leading up to this very promising and, quite surprising the record manages to live up to the hype. While I don't have any religious beliefs whatsoever and Christian music is just... not very good, I really appreciate that half•alive manages to surpass the expectations of the genre and focuses on both the sound and the lyrical content. "Now, Not Yet" is a well-produced, well-written, catchy, fun and just friggin’ adorable! Proooobably the best ... read more

I was thoroughly impressed by Half Alive's 3 Ep which I thought was a solid start for this new and coming Indie Rock/Pop band. I also was very impressed at the five singles that were released for this project. I was generally coming into this with high expectations. Did they meet them?

Definitely

This project saw them evolving their sound to a more clear and rounded mold which I was overall very impressed with. The best part of it in my opinion is the very clean production and sound which ... read more

Possibly the greatest "Christian" album ever: fully enjoyable for both devout believers and the atheist listener. The lyrics are profoundly spiritual, but are explored in such a well-crafted manner that I'm sure they will still resonate with casual listeners. Musically, we see cohesion, yet creative versatility, from the straight banger "still feel." to profoundly beautiful, exquisitely produced "creature". The arrangements are rich and adventurous, like drinking a ... read more

This is hands down the best "Christian" album I've ever heard.

Quotes around Christian, because it doesn't even sound like it. Being a Christian myself, I'm still disappointed by most Christian music, because it's typically lower quality, less catchy, less thoughtful, and overall just not unique.

Now, Not Yet is different. It transcends genres, isn't hastily crafted together to push a repetitive message, and has thoughtful, introspective lyrics. The way it tackles Christianity is ... read more

A dynamic, heartfelt record that is so fr*cking wholesome. I'm glad I gave this thing a few listens, because my initial reaction was that this wasn't all that great. But the band really comes through on this one with lots of strong hooks and incredibly tasteful production.

I'm a Christian who generally hates Christian music. It's nice to hear something that isn't soulless.

'Now, Not Yet' is a light indie pop album full of catchy pop tunes. While this album isn't as preachy or annoying as other Christian music (I apologize to my Christian friends, I love y'all but that music is garbage), Half Alive still fail to do anything that gives their music character. This album failed to take any interesting creative risks and what we're left with is a danceable version of the Newsboys. At it's worst moments, this album is a less obnoxious version of Imagine Dragons and at ... read more

Holy... wow. This is by far one of the strongest pop albums I've heard in a long time. The songwriting, production and vocal performances are all on point, and the vibes created are so unique. I can't wait to get to know this thing front to back.

Favourites: still feel, RUNAWAY, arrow, Maybe, ok ok
Least Favourites: the notion, ice cold

this album is just fantastic.

ok , i remember back in 2017 it was a few months into the twenty one pilots hiatus and i saw a video saying it was leaked music. i clicked and got very excited! before realising it was a troll video. but the songs that was used intrigued me. it was called “Tip Toes” and GOD did it sound like a twenty one pilots song, but alas no. however i listened to the ep it was off and i found a band that clearly still had to find their own sound but had a lot of ... read more

Now, Not Yet is an uplifting and life-affirming indie-pop album that manages to break from the negative stereotypes of the “Christian rock” label that would typically confine bands of Half-Alive’s ilk. In fact, I didn’t even know Half-Alive were considered a “Christian band” until I heard “Still Feel” playing in church one day. Josh Taylor’s lyrics touch on relatable themes such as self-reflection (“Runaway”), keeping hope in ... read more

I cannot say I haven't heard this before somewhere, originality and even identity has been something Half Alive has struggled with in the past. Still, compared to their awkward though valiant emo-electronica ep from a couple of years ago Now, Not Yet is a great step forward. Perhaps the band knows this themselves with that album title.

An album is far more than just the personal branding of the band that put it out, however. And for what it is, Now, Not Yet is a rather quaint little piece of ... read more

That's what the puppy wanted to type about this album so I'll keep it. This album dipped a little too heavy into the twentyonepilots pool for me, but overall that's my only knock. Really enjoyable album overall.

This album is such an experience, not like anything I've ever listened to. It is structured almost as a Christian album but it doesn't jump out at you like some (except for the final track, but it really works there). After almost 3 years of hype, it definitely pays off. The features aren't all that great (the features sound better than the band themselves), the rest of the songs are great. The final track is amazing, and all the singles work perfectly within the album. This is 'Trench' levels ... read more

This album is beautiful. Truely. Been looking foward to beautiful Now, Not Yet since still feel. and I have not been disappointed. The only thing I would change about this album is the features. I prefer half alive doing their thing solo. A masterpiece.

Best - ok ok?, RUNAWAY, still feel., TrusT, BREAKFAST, creature

Worst - ice cold., Rest

COMPOSITION, WRITING, SOUND:
After the Huge Success of "Still Feel" back in 2018, Half Alive has kind of made the whole idea of half alive to be 70's inspired. I at first was a little sad because I was hoping they would go the direction of "Awake At Night" on their first EP. But the style has grown on me a lot. The new style has gotten them to be way more creative though. "Ok, ok?" is such a creative track! The vocoding and percussion is genius. The lead on ... read more

I like this a lot. Incredibly clean production, great hooks, some interesting songs, and (like everybody else is saying) one of the better Christian albums I've listened to.

Edit1: This is a grower, yo. This whole thing is so TIGHT.

half.alive lives with the label of "christian band". But to think that their music is strictly that is, at the very least, a reductionism to what the band offers. Obviously the themes live around an appeal to faith, but this is not forced on the listener. In fact, Now, Not Yet brings it subtly by talking about self-acceptance, hope in bad times, and a more optimistic view of the world. But what strikes me most is the quality of the instrumentation, with an excellent work in the ... read more

I’m a bit dissapointed on this. Still Feel is one of my favorite songs of the year, but the rest of the album did not live up to it.

Standout tracks: ok ok?, still feel, arrow, creature.
