☆☆ ~ Regular album with a weak composition. It could be so much better than this.

This is almost good. There are some great moments; I think the album shoots the load a little early with 'Hey Mami.' I always hear a song from this album and want to like it more than I do. There are still some good ideas, and I do like Amelia Meath's vocals. She has a nice drawl in her voice that gives the songs a lot of personality. Still not great though, womp womp.

Even if their pitch of folk songs over indietronica arrangements isn’t all that novel, there’s something undeniably fresh and inspired about Sylvan Esso’s debut. The fact that the vocals and arrangements don’t quite match each other as closely as they could actually makes the album a more interesting listen, avoiding an easy-listening trap. And “Coffee,” the moment where everything comes together smoothly, is a fairly flawless Sylvan Esso mission statement. ... read more
