While its predecessor seemingly closed the "Amory Wars" saga, "Year of the Black Rainbow" was written as the prequel and it does that job with mixed results. The performances are great, Claudio's vocals are outstanding and the production from Atticus Ross is weirdly brilliant. But the story, lyrics and tone fall flat on their face.

Eh. It's fine. There are some new ideas being sprinkled through-out, such as the glitched out production from Articus Ross, and the more seemingly electronic elements inside some tracks. And there are moments of brilliance and astounding scope like with previous albums, but the records tone and flow is sloppy and boring to say the lest. Wow, this did not age well as an album. It's a big change from their familiar sound and I don't think it paid off. After a stellar first 4 albums, this feels like a frustrating nosedive. Multiple points try to make the album sound like a warzone and then it deviates hard into weirdo territory. An interlude involving wartime, similar to what Linkin Park did for A Thousand Suns, would have saved this album. This album is about as grey and industrial as the cover; that's not say that it is boring or bland, not at all... but this is a very different Coheed & Cambria album. Sonically, the songs sound bleak and claustrophobic, with many having a sort of wall of sound effect to them, mostly due to the insane drum work of Chris Pennie.
