The only thing that might hamper your ability to enjoy The Sailor is if you're just not a rap fan, or you're a little old.

HipHopDX

The Sailor showcases Brian’s expanding artistic curiosity and depth. Even if his ideas are sometimes a bit muddled and derivative, this project is an important stepping stone for his career.

Like all things Rich Brian, it falls between laugh-out-loud ridiculous and oddly sweet. But his career is getting harder and harder to dismiss.

The Needle Drop

The Sailor is by turns impressive and disheveled in its combination of so many rap and pop music styles.

On "The Sailor", Rich Brian makes the faithful transition from internet personality to artist.

Rich Brian's artistic growth is truly something to admire and appreciate! Just 3 years ago, Brian Imanuel was uploading YouTube videos like "how to microwave #bread", learning the English language from the Internet, and filming his low-budget MV for "Dat $tick", which went viral and put him on the map. Holy shit, what a big surprise. As much as I enjoyed 'Amen' last year, Rich Brian totally gets rid of the trap aesthetic. He has somewhat of a musical awakening, as he brings a whole new sound to his name. His bars still hit hard; his energy still stays up; his charming delivery never ceases.

He fucking did it. He crushed all my expectations away. This is one of, if not the absolute best pop-rap album I've heard in my entire life.

The thing with Rich Brian for me, at least, before this album, it's that he has the potential to make bangers but most his tracks are very much forgettable. There were at most 4 or 5 good tracks on Amen. Do the test for yourself: how many tracks do you consider as "essential", or can you even recall the name of, on Amen? Another thing with how ... read more

The Sailor sees Rich brian embarking on a much more ambitious journey than his last full length album. The production, as well as content, flows, and overall personality have all been amped up substantially. While Rich Brian still has a long way to go before he releases a genre defining project, he is certainly taking big steps in the right direction.
