Glass Beach's first album cones off as a surprise since it's an overlooked album from 2019 and I'm not a big fan of it's main genres (Indie Rock and Pop Punk). Glass Beach don't really reinvent the genres but they are able to twist them on their own terms to create a beautiful sounding album.

IT'S SO FRICKING WHOLESOME, LISTEN TO IT!!!

I want to live in that album cover! Also, 25TH RATING WOO!

So lately, I've been seeing Glass Beach surfing around the web, from my Twitter feed to AOTY to Buffalo Staple's review on YT. There just seems to be a lot of discussion about this online, and seeing how it surprisingly has under 25 ratings, I decided to finally check this out! I have no idea who these people are, but I totally did not expect to hear something like this!

As an album experience, this was pretty refreshing! There are a ... read more

A polished, well thought-out indie rock album. Not something that you see all too often these days. I wasn't blown away, but I did feel like I was breathing clean air for the first time after living in Beijing for 6 months or something. Reminds me of Fang Island too.

thank you joao dallas is arguably my song of the year. you were a part of a picture :( i cant recall :'(

I don't know why but this album reminds me so much of The Life of Pablo. The way the core and deep cuts of the album are treated are nearly identical. The deep cuts are room for experimentation and the core cuts are usually pretty traditional in the genres they are tackling but are much longer and, for me, are the peaks of the album. This album, like The Life of Pablo, is very scattered ... read more

This is a fucking masterpiece. I listened to this with my friends while going through an airport and I have to say every bit is a wild rush. It may not be the most inventive or creative out there, but FUCK it creates a wonderful blend of all the genres I like listening to.

Definitely my AOTY.

Great

WHY DIDN’T I LISTEN TO THIS EARLIER??
The amount of genre-bending that ‘glass beach’ exhibit on their debut is rarely replicated elsewhere. This particular album sounds like if Joji had a Queen influence and went pop-punk.

The highlight for me are the sweet and nostalgic chord progressions that are implemented on tracks such as ‘classic j dies and goes to hell pt. 1’ and ‘orchids’, which exquisitely bookend the project. This was a major ... read more

a very refreshing take on what I would imagine a pop punk album to sound like.
the first glass beach album mixes a handful of genres and they accomplish that in a beautiful manner. the way they go from energetic, edgy, whiny pop punk to the more melancholic clean guitar tracks to the ambient ones to whatever they feel like, while keeping the immersiveness and the engagingness of the album, shows their versatility and musical abilities very well. well, some tracks its ambient, some tracks its ... read more

What even is this? What would this genre even be? There's so many. Indie rock. Pop. Emo. Punk. Lo-fi. Ambient. Jazz. How does this fusion of all these genres work so well? This honestly surprised me so well. Glass Beach really have a promising future ahead of them.

This album is such a pleasant ride from front to back. This is definitely an album that you can just throw on and chill out to. It's such a calming and fun album to listen to, and - I know it has been said a lot before me - it's so ... read more

AJR disapoints me. With their song palette and ideas they could have been one of my favorite artists, but they have nothing to talk about, so they talk about stupid vapid shit. Irrelevant Pylosophys about sex and age. If only there was someone out there who knew exactly what to say. What exactly could strike my soul...

Glass Beach makes something that shouldn't exist. There's no possible way for it to exist. It's too immaculate to deserve existsance. The way an album has the ability to juggle ... read more

A really cool album experience for sure. It's dynamic and has a real larger-than-life feel. I hear some MCR and Sufjan Stevens influence, but there's a lot of other sounds coming together as well. This group has a bright future I think!

Liked it a lot actually, love all the sounds and ambient this project gives you, and the cover is beautiful as well.

Their debut basically holds the most prodigious game of spot-the-precursor you'll set your ears on this year. It's a power pop fueled soap opera that doesn't ever feel the need to stagnate it's impact, even at it's most serene moments. Glass Beach's midwest substratum pilled up on top of anthemic pop-punkified leanings, flung into vast stylistic enclaves will leave people wondering whether it's execution would play out. Not only is this record superbly performed; but to leave thoughts of ... read more

This album is perfectly summed up with the band’s name. Glass beach. It’s a beautiful stream with glitters from the ocean, but it’s fragile nature brings this album to a perfect wrapping fit.

This feels like if the Beach Boys and American Football had a child, but one of them had an affair with an ambient album (I can’t name one). Also, I can get some pretty hard Weezer White Album vibes from tracks like 'neon glow' and 'glass beach'. 'cold weather' feels like a ITAOTS ... read more

So wholesome and lovely. I'm getting huge The Music Tapes vibes from some of this, particularly The Orbiting Human Circus.

Edit: I just wanted to mention that I did, in fact, finish the album.

I haven't even finished this and I love it, so much. Think of a punkier Cavetown and this is that, it's so pure and wholesome, the soundscape is beautiful, the lyrics are relatable as all heck. The latter half of 2019 looks really promising if we're getting already 2 aoty contenders (this and Caligula). Each song honestly feels like, just me and an album doesn't do this often, last time I felt this was with Dear. and Lemon ... read more

Holy moly this album... With my first two listens, my first listen had me caught off guard at plenty of points, with art rock, lofi production, and the small ambient sections of this album. I was shocked, it only took me too my second listen to fully appreciate this album, and wow, just wow.
It feels so warm and comforting while still being ambitious and almost, dare I say, "epic", its outstanding on many levels, and also, its just cute and sweet. Its a pretty basic thing to say but ... read more

I feel like if I were to record a serious album it would sound vaguely like this. You know, Weezer/ Jeff Rosenstock plus bedroom pop with random jazz interludes and somewhat unconventional song structures. Some moments are a little boring, but as far as influence-core, modern indie rock albums go this is really good. Please go listen to cold weather, that track slaps. And the title track too, that’s anthemic.

Very very good for a bedroom album(?). Excellent production and the lead singer has a unique sounding voice despite somehow sounding like every single 00s emo band... The whole aesthetic of the album is pretty unique in general tbf not sure what about it gives it that feel but it's definitely a must listen.

It was pretty enjoyable but didn't hugely capture me unlike other emo/post-punk albums this year hence the (relatively) low score.

I was made aware of this album through Twitter about a month ago, and originally listened to it at that point. However, I was only just able to relisten to it just recently. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this record. The creativity which glass beach possesses is plain to see, as this album goes all over the place in a good way. There are moments on this album which would fit on a lo-fi album, and moments which possess a punk/rock sound as well. The vocal performances on this album are very ... read more

Is this real gamer music? Lot of Nintendo-esque things going on. Nice blend of synthpop, emo, power pop, and other genres. It's a bit long. I don't think it ever necessarily runs out of ideas, more like they try to put too many ideas in one song. If you're struggling to get through, I at least recommend checking out the last two tracks which are quite accessible and great. There's a lot to work with here and I could see this band garnering quite a following.

a bravado cavalcade destroying every foundational genre. heartfelt insolence, jagged, kitschy, leaving musical normality on pause. questing restlessly, soaring triumphantly, urging vociferously: what x? your zenith.

So I found Cold Winters on my Discover Weekly, I thought it was really good. Decided to listen to the whole LP and I fell in love with a new artist. This LP is honestly too good. There is so much stuff going on that you're just taking in everything at once. Very well done, looking forward to there next LP.

Favorite Tracks: classic j dies and goes to hell, Pt. 1, Bedroom Community, (Forever?????????), Bone Skull, Neon Glow, Cold Weather, Calico, Glass Beach, (Blood Rivers), Dallas, (Rat ... read more

Entitling this "the first glass beach album" is an interesting move, and is very implicative that there will be a second glass beach album. I admire that ambition, and after listening to this I welcome that second album. This rocks.

It feels so lush, yet with definite lo-fi infusions; the production is killer, with several layers of sound and texture. Some really great pop punk mixed with cool effects and instrumentation, some electronica and ambient influence as well as chiptune. It ... read more

This album just does so much for me.

Do you wanna tear your lungs out and destroy your airways singing along to this? You got it.
Do you wanna wallow in self-pity and remorse in bed at 3 AM? Just put this on at absolutely ear-shattering volume and your good to go. This album just has everything, all the while being eclectically consistent in it's sound.

An absolute all time favorite for me.

Easily one of the most colorful and creative albums of 2019 thus far. The blend of power pop, indie, jazz, punk, lofi and ambient in each song is very unique and well executed. I have to say that the best songs are the two openers and two closers, the highlight of those four being Yoshi's Island. I do think there are some genre combinations that don't go together very well and some tracks that are just plain messy (Soft!!!!!! being the PRIME example of messy), but said tracks are usually saved ... read more

When the first song started, I wasn't feeling it, but then it hits you so hard and I was endeared to listen to the entire thing again, and again, and again. Shit man, it's hard to describe this album. Whatever emotion you're feeling will work well with it? Maybe not, but for me it does. I love its ingenuity and the mix of different sounds leading you to either get wrecked or feel wholesome, or both at the same time. Whatever it is, it's good. No, it's exceptional. This record IS MORE THAN JUST ... read more

UGHHHHHHHHHH, this is a beautiful mix of various genres, its kinda hard to grasp, but all I can tell its its very soft, its a mix of a ton of artist and bands, good shit! Some of this shit is very amazing, you hear one band, then you also hear another, AND THEN ANOTHER, its so compact its scary

Wow, pop-punk in the year 2019! And good pop-punk at that, too! This is a fun, at times nostalgic feeling album that at the same time is incredibly refreshing. I say refreshing because even though it does rely a bit on its influences, it still manages to sound completely new. It does this by mashing several genres together. While I would definitely give it the label of pop-punk, it also incorporates sounds of indie rock, post-punk, electronic, emo (at least in the vocal style), and more. This ... read more

Where to begin with this album. It's all over the place, but in a good way. I hear Neutral Milk Hotel sounds, Animal Collective sounds, Los Campesinos sounds, Death Cab for Cutie sounds, and fucking Blank Banshee sounds. I don't know what to call this thing, but it isn't boring. The only real knock i can give this effort from Glass Beach is that the album is a jack of all trades but master of none. They manage to make all of the genre hopping work, but not every shot nails the bullseye. ... read more
