The Dixie Chicks never got the credit they deserved. Today, their narrative seems to mostly be centered around their (completely righteous) Iraq War comments and the subsequent PR wars with country radio and Toby Keith. Less frequently acknowledged is the singular role they played in the mainstream contemporary country universe. One must consider here the great usage of not only banjo and acoustic instrumentation, but sharp lyrics that are amazing at best (the "Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard.." lines are the greatest of the bunch), and heartfelt at worst. The Dixie Chicks have a recycled sound, like almost all modern country singers do. However, they make the most of it in this album.
