Anna Meredith's second record follows a similar form to her first album. She takes a small concept and expands the sonic potential to comical extremes. Her previous album, Varmints, played with music that scurried around your skull. The songs jittered and refused to leave your brain through catchy hooks and repetitive beats. Anna Meredith’s second album is filled with utopias within an utopian macrosm, her maximalist approach to electronic and acoustic instrumentation yet pushed to a different sonic territory unlike before. This is avant-garde at its most playful and creative that feels fresh and right now.
FIBS gives me good reason to believe there could be a masterpiece in Anna's future. She has an interesting approach to music and a wide range of ideas. Calion might be the electronic song of the year. I think I just fail to feel the cohesion in it all as it alternates between male and female vocals and quite robotically between instrumental and vocal-laden tracks.
this album sounds grand, even when it recycles ideas to create something new and exciting.
