Straus is more concerned about her music than any cultural positioning and in that regard, Cheap Queen is a total flex.
King Princess’ work is arrestingly transgressive because of how comfortable she is with her sexuality.
I think King Princess has huge potential to be a great queer artist and it shows on a number of songs. I think the production is great, her songwriting is catchy and pretty solid and her vocals are really good. The big problem I have with "Cheap Queen" is that the tracklist is extremely inconsistent.

I like her style, she’s a great artist but this album is very inconsistent, like, she’s not shaping her persona the way she should. Few ideas and no singularity. The best songs here are the singles
King Princess is such a surprise these days isn't she??? A queer artist who is not afraid of pushing boundaries and making excellent music at the same time. Once again, I’ve literally seen King Princess in concert but nothing about this album was memorable to me. It’s interesting enough and sounds good to listen to, but I just don’t like it. A few songs are ones I would revisit, but the vast majority I’m good with this being my last time venturing into. She’s just not an artist I think I’m ever going to naturally gravitate toward. Not even having a song called Ohio can free her from my wrath.
