Fairly uninspiring
Hiss Golden Messenger is an artist I wish I enjoyed more than I did. I liked "Heart Like a Levee" when it came out but haven't found myself revisiting it much, while his latest just hasn't grabbed me yet. And when attempting to visit "Lateness of Dancers," I was left cold. To be sure, there are songwriting chops here, and the Southern soul-infused folk/country sound is warm and appealing. For those of you unfamiliar with Hiss Golden Messenger (a.k.a the largely solo project of MC Taylor, together with longtime collaborator Scott Hirsch), Lateness of Dancers is, as far as I know, his fifth full-length; all almost equally brilliant, although very different inside of a broader definition of tradition American singer-songwriting and folk-rock in general.
