The Guardian

A hugely exciting album that underlines Simpson’s status as a daring, restless and unique artist.

Exclaim!

Listeners should strap in and brace themselves for some stylistic hairpin turns.

80
The Independent

It’s pure rock and roll: sleazy, slick and lots of fun. Sound & Fury marks another milestone for a remarkable artist.

80
Sputnikmusic

Sound & Fury is a no-frills charge ahead that embodies the album’s namesake: a whole lot of rock, riffs, and rage.

72
Pitchfork

The fourth album from the country outlaw is another left-turn with synth-rock at its scuzziest, boogie-rock at its cheesiest, all held together by Simpson’s fearless songwriting.

70
Rolling Stone

Simultaneously the most left-field, decisively non-country offering of Simpson’s career and precisely the record anyone who has been paying any attention to his career over the last several years would have expected him to make.

70
American Songwriter

Those with open minds and an affinity for ’80s sounds should warm up to this unanticipated, intense but generally enticing music.

65
Paste

On its own, the album is loud, sometimes cranky and also the least essential entry in Simpson’s catalog so far.

60
AllMusic

Every element of Sound & Fury telegraphs that Simpson will not be contained by the conventional definitions of country, whether it's mainstream, Americana, or old-fashioned outlaw.

60
The Observer

Throughout, a commitment to heartfelt songcraft remains the most “country” thing about Sound & Fury.

This is one of those albums that sound exactly like the album cover looks 💥💥💥

What happened to Sturgill Simpson? For his fourth album entitled "Sound & Fury", the star of the new country scene, celebrated by critics as the savior of outlaw country and Grammy Award winner for best country album of 2017 with "A Sailor's Guide to Earth", makes a 180 degree turn! Forget the Waylon Jennings accents of "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" (2014), the 2019 ... read more

Not sure how I feel about the radio dial static between songs, and maybe this isn't as mind blowing as I hoped, but still this is super fun musically. Definitely cooks real hot at times. Could see most of these songs being jammed out in the live setting. These songs don't really end, they just kind of crash one into another.

Who knew a few ZZ Top riffs would turn Sturgill into Robert Palmer?

Fun...but dumb....but fun...........but dumb

But fun?

When an artist suddenly switches their sound in a drastic direction it can be easy for us to compare it to past releases. For us to get mad and site their innovations in past sounds. But that's not exactly fair. All musicians deserve the right to change and let their creativity breathe. In the end, the only thing that should matter is if the music is good?

So, is the music good? Yeah? Don't get me wrong, it isn't Sailor's Guide to Earth by any measure, but it isn't supposed to be. This is a ... read more

It's hilarious that there will actually be people complaining about how this doesn't sound country when the dude made a friggin' anime companion film for it.
