The Line of Best Fit

The songs on this album seem to start at a small point in an undefined centre before pulsing outwards in all directions, changing form and structure as they go – in that respect, it’s almost impossible to describe what this music sounds like, or how it might make you feel.

The Skinny

The four-piece, Leeds Uni alumni and students of Joanna Newsom, Van Morrison and Animal Collective, have taken their time to craft nine songs of enduring scope and warmth, despite seeming to vaguely resent the idea of making it.

80
DIY

Without a doubt an audacious first effort, Adult Jazz have lovingly crafted a record of intriguing, ear-catching pop music on ‘Gist Is’.

80
NME

It’s all there: the sparse guitars, the minimalist percussion, Harry Burgess’ oddly pitched vocals, the vaguely spiritual intellectualism. But ‘Gist Is’ is more than a poor man’s ‘An Awesome Wave’.

AllMusic

Gist Is may not seem accessible on first listen, but any degree of patience will be rewarded abundantly. It's uncompromising yet masterful, an auspicious and perhaps even magical first offering.

Pitchfork

Gist Is is full of clever turns of musical and lyrical phrase which will dispel possible accusations of self-indulgence and pretension, and somehow, within just a few listens, it becomes easy to enjoy this unusually paced album of so few easy hooks, and so many seemingly insignificant words.

70
Drowned in Sound

It’s an unapologetically impressive and precise record that could do more to reach out and connect, rather than just dancing off, expecting the listener to follow.

50
Consequence of Sound

Unfortunately, it seems the desire to be wild and innovative eclipsed the will to create songs that hold together.

I was sent this record by a fellow music junkie with no previous knowledge of the band at all. This record blew me away with how complete it is. The songs on this album are catchy, yet not meaningless which I don't find much of anymore. If you're stumbling upon this record, definitely give it a shot. I would also recommend heavy patience for it to get going, it starts out slowly but every second is worth it.

After hearing a couple singles from Earrings Off, I was hesitant about this. Holy cow I was wrong. This nine track album feels so cohesive, colorful, and complete. All ranges of emotion are involved in this thing, which I didn't expect after hearing their uppity Earrings Off singles. And the production is spectacular for a debut. The sounds on this thing are so unique, as well as crisp and crystal clear. I think the stringed instruments really work for them most. Really liked this album, and ... read more
