Marvin Gaye with the ultimate breakup album right here. I think the circumstances of this record really make this album what it is. Marvin was coming off of a difficult divorce with his partner Anna, where part of the divorce agreement was to give half of the royalties of his upcoming album to Anna. Here, My Dear. What a petty name, I love it. Throughout the project, the production has a clean flow in each song, with standard soul groove and some pretty saxophone solos. Since the sax is generally mixed in the background, it works best as a supplement to his voice (like on When Did You Stop Loving Me) as the vocals are the most significant component this album presents. An album dedicated to his ex-wife, Anna Gordy, that carries all the frustration of a divorce but, on the other hand, he manages to turn embarrassment into emotion and not into apology.
