Even with its imposing length and deep roster of collaborators, the ecstatic new album from Thurston Moore is arguably the most accessible entry point into his boundless experimental canon.

Ultimately ... Spirit Counsel is his reaffirmation of faith in the pushing of boundaries, it hits more than it misses. But even if it didn’t, it feels like a breakthrough.

Best Thurston since Demolishes Thoughts. Sprawling guitar soundscapes, heady ambiance almost along the lines of classic rockers' solo entries of Mark Knopfler or Steve Hackett. Perhaps far from his lo-fi or garage tendencies, but with the same rollicking spirit that keeps rock alive and artistically adventurous.

Outstanding improvisational guitar-beauty epics.

Could it have shed 30 minutes of length to its benefit? Yes.

The second cut is the juiciest and the only one of the three I’d be loathe to shorten or edit.
