The Line of Best Fit

It is, essentially, just another Italians Do It Better album: aesthetically perfect, sonically gorgeous and endlessly replayable.

Closer To Grey feels more polished and shimmering, and with only 12 tracks and a compact 45 minutes, it’s considerably shorter than the expansive, sometimes daunting records it followeds.

Closer to Grey feels more like a loose assemblage of good-to-great tunes than it does a cohesive album, especially with the level of production perfectionism Johnny Jewel and company are known for.

The Guardian

Smart production, corrupted sounds and existential dread set Kill for Love’s successor apart from schlockier 80s pop reincarnations.

Chromatics out Chromatics themselves with their most Chromatics release to date.

This is mostly a compliment. The gang returns with eerie, Lynchian synth-pop that evokes shadowy clubs and endless car rides through the night. They add some new and exciting electronic noises, and the songwriting is tighter. A Celebration of Life: Dear Tommy
"Closer To Grey" isn't the most cohesive record I've heard this year, and I don't really see how this is an album 7 years in the making, but it's still a spooky, catchy and well-written synthpop record that has a good amount of hits and a few surprisingly excellent covers.

Fav Tracks: Touch Red, Whispers In The Hall, On The Wall, Twist The Knife, The Sound Of Silence, Wishing Well

Least Fav Track: Through The Looking Glass

And I would answer 'Yes, but man what else do you need in 2019 besides some nice new Chromatics tracks? Global warming is happening. If you want something else go listen to something else. No one makes dark moody synthpop like Janny Jewel and the Jewlers. Crystal Castles is dead. Just appreciate what we have and go forth into the next decade a ... read more
Closer To Grey is like a bear hug from a friend you haven't seen in years. You haven't felt their embrace in ages, but it's just as comforting now as it was then. The songs of Closer To Grey could've come from the same sessions as their last full length, Kill For Love. Their brand of hypnotic synthwave is still as potent as it was in 2012, and the influence of noir and film soundtracks has never been more apparent. It isn't the opus that KFL was, but the trimmed tracklist and song runtime leads ... read more
