"Hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life!"
-Cannonball Adderley

Adderley sure was hip - hip as can be. Recorded not long after meeting Miles Davis, Somethin' Else was a big deal for both musicians. This album is almost as much of a Miles Davis record as it is Cannonball Adderley's, as he selected most of the material for the album and takes a massive presence. The History of the Albums - n°72

This album has some of the best solo work in jazz I've ever heard. Each song captures the performer's unique style, you can really tell they are pouring their passion into the instrument.

I think "Autumn Leaves" is pretty good. Wish it was shorter and a little tighter. "Love for Sale" is fine, nothing blowing my mind. Needs a Mingus punch. Wish it was 20% harder. "Somethin' Else" is pretty lame for a titular track. I found "One for The Daddy-O" kind of boring too. And this version isn't bad, but I much prefer Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark". In sum, cool ideas here left dull by extended solos. All star cast, ... read more
