The Guardian
The obligatory boring ballads aside, the results are astonishing.

Pitchfork

A lush and preeminently sex-positive album that deserves a reappraisal.

60
Slant Magazine
The album features a slew of the gooey, structureless sex ballads that have become Janet’s staple.
60
Q Magazine

The sex tracks themselves are more scary than seductive ... the dancefloor tunes are far more slinky.

Entertainment Weekly
For the most part, the songs are stylized set pieces — the furthest thing from steamy R&B — and they evaporate as you listen to them.
40
AllMusic
Ironically, for an album with so much sex on its mind, it's not a good make-out record because its grooves are cold and Janet's ceaseless dirty talk spoils whatever mood the music had struggled to create.

NOW Magazine

I like porn as much as the next person, but if I wanted to hear a phone sex operator, I'd call one. Too bad the sweet melodies get lost in all the embarrassing crap.

The Independent

Damita Jo confirms what we already suspected: that the quality of a product is inversely proportional to the ludicrousness of the publicity stunt required to flog it.

(Gonna do a new series where I listen to one album from every year on my birthday that I was alive for [2004-2021]. So for those that might ask why I did this album specifically, that is why.)

This album was boring. I know that might piss some people off, and if you genuinely enjoy this album, aye, more power to you, I’m happy you see something on this album you like and enjoy. But me personally, this was just a damn snooze fest. There are moments of quality that I do really ... read more

Janet Jacksons's 8th Album 'Damita Jo'

Starts really strong but fairly quickly becomes fairly middle of the road after R&B Junkie. Picks up a little at the end but not enough to repair the loss of attention from the middle. Arguably her worst album since the early 80s.

Top 5 Highlights:

Damita Jo, Island Life, All Nite, R&B Junkie and SloLove

Sure, we can't always rate her current works to her greatest, and 22 years in the music industry will wear out artists one way or another. But Damita Jo remains one of the most maligned and criminally underrated works of the 2000s. Yes, this album is far too long for its own good and like All For You, in the latter half it runs into troubles with some less exciting, more filler-esque slow R&B ballads that yearn for the golden days of her music. But now with Dallas Austin, Kanye West, ... read more
