Drowned in Sound

While not as immediate as either of the two records that came before it, Penny Sparkle still manages to both enlighten and engage in equal measures, yet also retain an air of mystery about it that flourishes with every listen.


Penny Sparkle is so laid back that it's almost lackadaisical. Hardly surpassing the tempo of a comatose patient's heartbeat, it floats along upon a cloud of minimalism and tranquillity.

When I saw the critic scores to this album, what instantly stood out to me was the 4.0 Pitchfork score. Surely, one of the worst albums in 2010 in their opinion, though they have been praising this same band earlier. Something must've changed.

I haven't actually listened to any other album by Blonde Redhead, but after listening to this album, I read the review. What i can gather is that apparently Blonde Redhead on this album moved away from sounds similar to My Bloody Valentine and Sonic ... read more
