The Needle Drop

H.A.Q.Q. is the culmination of all of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's musical innovations this decade.

Liturgy have once again crafted a coherent album-length suite of music, but this time they've remembered to make actual songs too.

Yes, H.A.Q.Q. cements Liturgy’s try-hard reputation. But it’s kind of thrilling to hear any band try this hard.

What "Jesus is King" should have been.

The new Liturgy odyssey, "H.A.Q.Q", is an excellent album in the current "post-black metal" movement (or "hipster black metal" if you prefer), which shows that a genre which got used to remain frozen in its "the trve, the kvlt" clichés, still in perpetual evolution and has been used, improved and recycled in an original way.

Musically, non-metal extracts (without distortion, symphonic vocalizations ... read more

Yeah so outside of the Exaco tracks and the closer this albums a banger. I maybe prefer Aesthethica slightly but this record is a good time. Chaotic yet really catchy.

PS- Can we all actually stop whining about Fantano stans altering the scores based off his reviews? I honestly don't even see it that much but I see people complaining about it pretty often. Just let the man have opinions and let people like albums he likes.

Liturgy's H.A.Q.Q can be a bit of a mixed bag at times in my opinion. I was really intrigued by the tags this album was getting (avant-garde symphonic glitch black metal essentially), and I decided to check it out. Liturgy's seemingly surprise (at least to me) new album is unexpectedly forward-thinking and experimental. The band's black metal core sound is intertwined with harsh hits of noise, distortion and strange clipping effects that lead to songs that writhe and collapse in on themselves. The songwriting and performances here are mostly your standard black metal, but Liturgy doesn't hide their vocalist behind a wall of instrumentation, placing them quite high in the mix. Sometimes this isn't always ... read more

Wow. T R A N S C E N D E N T A L B L A C K M E T A L is pretty cool. The album opens with the very explosive opener, "H.A.J.J.", which really lets you know what type of album you are going into. It starts off with some simple piano chords, and then so many layers of instrumentation is added on. There is an incredibly messy, and chaotic flute part. It kind of sounds like the clarinet player in my band class, who only knows how to badly play the Star Wars theme. Then there is Hunter's ... read more
