Popular Problems is a mature work that could only be created after a lifetime spent in art, at a point when the search for the “holy” and the “beautiful” have been reconciled with human frailty.

Exclaim!

Popular Problems, Cohen's 13th studio album, marks both his 80th birthday and his best record since 2001's Ten New Songs. It's surprising, deeply moving and occasionally stunning.

A.V. Club

At nine tracks in 36 minutes, Problems is the artist’s leanest disc since Various Positions in 1984, as well as one of his sharper and more musically adventurous.

American Songwriter

That variety helps to highlight Cohen’s interpretive skills. Those who dismiss his vocals as monotone are missing out on the soulful power he brings to “Did I Ever Love You” or the sly humor he ladles on “Slow.”

Tiny Mix Tapes

Popular Problems, his 13th studio album, has everything of which a latter-day Cohen album is popularly known to be composed

Cohen claims to have been working on these songs for decades, and many of them at once encapsulate and transcend the contents in which they were first penned.

NME

As intimate, beautiful and witty as ever, there’s an impassioned life in Leonard that's missing from many artists a quarter of his age.

76
Pitchfork

As with the 2012 LP Old Ideas, its best songs feel naked and hymn-like but are restrained by an underlying mystery—he sounds like he's telling you everything but he never actually tips his hand.

75
Consequence of Sound

Popular Problems is a revelation, a document of an artist continuing to produce engaging material into his eighth decade of life without sounding stale.

70
Drowned in Sound

A concise collection of nine tracks curated by a man who has rediscovered his musical spark, surrounded by sympathetic collaborators, ironically brought to life following a mammoth betrayal from someone he once trusted.

70
PopMatters

Popular Problems is an album that listeners will return to, not just for the poetic depth we’ve come to expect from Mr. Cohen, but also for the sonic variety and virtuosity of his accompanists.

An impressive album by Cohen so late in his career. It was a musically, and lyrically sharp album. Cohen is one of the few long-time veteran musicians that continue to make quality music late in their lives.

Having decided that he'll be with us more frequently that he used to, I must admit that his voice will always be a warm comfort.
