Cosmic country with a Fleetwood Mac feminine touch and a melancholic death wish to leave behind the perfect corpse. Is that a tear in your eye boy?

This came straight out of nowhere to be one of the best albums of the year.

This album is absurdly gorgeous on the surface. Songs like Suzuki Dreams are the reason I love music. It just swallows you up in layers of warm, soft, bittersweet sound. This album is so good, in fact, that I’m not even going to go into my usual tangent of, “This is real country.” It’s not worth it. This is just music on a different level.

I have never heard of Honey Harper, but after a 36 ... read more

If you look at both the AOTY as well as the Spotify recommendations for Honey Harper, you can tell the algorithm is totally lost on what to compare his sound to stylistically. There's a reason for that - there downright is nothing that sounds quite like this.

The mixture of dreamy, spacious and gorgeous production with traditional country music is such a fresh sound that I'm not entirely sure what to do with it, both as I listen and as I try to review it. It's a complete anomaly, as ... read more

Starmaker is the kind of dream you would like to revisit every night, because in addition to being a real surprise, it is of such fascinating beauty and emotion.

Originally from Atlanta, now living in London, Honey Harper offers an alternative music with a traditional and cultural character, which can be defined as Country or Folk, but after listening to Starmaker you will understand that even though it has a basic sound that we will find in the whole, it has a totally diversified palette of ... read more

Amazing

Originally, this was a very pretentious review, so I decided to scrap it because I’m not going to be “that guy”

Honey Harper's album was really a body of work I've been anticipating for quite sometime since the album cover looked so enticing. That's really all I had to go off of. Well, it's a good thing the music is just as stellar as the cover.

This is such a beauteous debut. The sonic palette here is just so layered and all incompassing, and yet so warm and soothing. Filled with lush ambient arrangements, lovely guitars, and heavenly vocal layering. Harper really crafts a truly unique country/folk ... read more

It is funny to see that this album gets a lot of credit while other albums of the genre of this year like Saturn return from the secret sisters got some mixxed ratings with an equal songwriting quality , detailed (yet more rooted) instrumentation and a better vocal work.

But anyone, this one is solid, not astonishing, which is the same case for plenty albums this year. Where are the groundbreaking albums ?
One of the power of Starmaker is that it is really pleasant to multiple ears. I don't ... read more

You hear that, yh that is the sound of a gorgeous alt-country album. Starmaker is the debut album of Honey Harper and what a debut. It is beautiful with the soundscape it creates and you honestly feel the struggle Honey harper has gone through in a genre of music which in recent years has been quite frowned upon (especially with bro country) but this album jusitifies why country can be an amazing genre of music because this is amazing

Honey Harper and his team chose possibly the most fitting album cover of the year. The cover is a visual manifestation to how it feels to listen to this album. I have never come across this artist before, and found this album through AOTY. I listened to the first song and instantly put it in my queue.

My campus shut down, and is strongly encouraging everyone to move back home for the remainder of the semester. I'm moving out tomorrow morning. Amid all the chaos that the world, and I, are ... read more

I couldn't dissect and explicate this album if I tried to, but I do want to say how it made me feel, since the visceral aspects of music have always appealed to me much more than anything technical. For a time, I lived in a mobile home outside Heber Springs, Arkansas. I'd take walks with my camera through the brush and tall trees separating each house from the other, shooting the spaces where the trees would open up into someone's yard or the narrow road that connected us all, shooting my dog ... read more

Who knew dreamy alt-country existed?

On Honey Harper's debut LP, he takes the Western sounds of old country music and mixes it with ambient tendencies, dreamy, reverb-soaked production, and string ensembles taken straight out of a Final Fantasy soundtrack. Starmaker shows that this new sound has a lot of potential, and while it's yet to reach that potential, it's still quite a pleasant listen.

Honey Harper satisfies on his debut album Starmaker. Dreamy production complemented with stellar songwriting, Fussell comes together with one of the magnificent debuts I have heard in a very long time.

FAVORITE TRACK: Tomorrow Never Comes

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Green Shadows

See I've always considered myself more of an Orville Peck kinda country gay but I do fuck with Honey Harper. Harper's voice is the centerpiece of this record, he has a deep, twangy kind of voice that is usually something I don't go for but his voice paired up with the country and indie-inspired guitars is just amazing. Harper also keeps true to an old-times country sound on Tired Tower which is something I absolutely ... read more

This is a very pretty album all the way through. My favorites are "In Light of Us," "The Day it Rained Forever," and 'Vaguely Satisfied."

Honey Harper’s Spotify bio tells you everything you need to know. He “reimagines country music for people who don’t like country music”. And you can definitely hear that in his debut record.
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for country as it holds some nostalgic value but it’s one of those genres that struggles in the ambition and variation departments.
Starmaker takes the best qualities of country (the beautiful and mesmerizing crooning, the slow and ... read more

This record is spectacular and important for numerous reasons. To begin with, it shows that country is more than corny music about girls and your hat, and much more than the meme-music that now seems to define country (e.g., Lil Nas X). Second of all, it shows that country music allows for experimentation and for innovation.

Therefore, this album encompasses everything that country needs. The instrumentals are incredibly detailed and various genres (e.g., folk, singer-songwriter, country) are ... read more

I made my parents listen to this, because they like some older country music. my mom described this album as "twangier Mazzy Star," which I think is a pretty spot-on observation. dreamy alt-country was something I didn't know I was missing out on. thank you for throwing this at me outta left field, Honey!!

I mean wow, i dont listen to much country music but this is actually very good. His voice and the intrumentals sounds very good together. I feel like this is not just country, is many differents sounds in 1 mixed into a very good debut album. People should absolutely give this a try.

it's not bad and it's interesting in some parts but it's kinda overhyped imo

Some tracks remind me of The War on Drugs-esque Americana, which, not in a good way, are in contrast with the lusher parts of Chamber Pop and his vocal and harmonization. Nevertheless a decent effort though at times boring.
