AllMusic
D'Angelo concentrates on classic versions of soul and R&B, but unlike most of his contemporaries, he doesn't cut and paste older songs with hip-hop beats; instead, he attacks the forms with a hip-hop attitude, breathing new life into traditional forms.

No matter how delicate or dusty sounding a track may be, D'Angelo flips the script with B-boy savoir-faire: He makes the nasty rhythms bubbling underneath his multilayered love songs seem old and new at the same time.

There is no need to go in to a huge breakdown like I usually do, this album simply put is smooth as motherfucking butter bro.

I've always preferred this over Voodoo.
It's his most consistent album to date with many of some of his best songs. Not a single skip from front to back. The instrumental production was eargasmic and smooth, and his voice was nothing less than angelic. One of the best debut albums of all time.

I want some of your Brown Sugar ( SUUUUUGAAAAAR). One of the best debut albums in rnb. Slow sex and sweetness all combined into one album

Just because something’s influential doesn’t necessarily make it great. Literally this album for the most part is D’Angelo singing the same hook over and over again for sometimes 6 minutes. I get it’s a turning point in contemporary R&B, but there are so many better offerings out there from this time period. While certainly not devoid of merit, this is one of the most overrated albums of all time.

'Brown Sugar' is as smooth as a baby's bottom and a landmark in neo-soul.

FAVORITE TRACKS: BROWN SUGAR; JONZ IN MY BONZ; SHIT, DAMN, MOTHERFUCKER; CRUISIN'; LADY.
