Jenny And Johnny make no attempt to hide their retrospective stylings; I'm Having Fun Now is an album built on classic rock 'n' roll principles, lending it a sort of timelessness, and so the parallels with revivalist pair She & Him inevitably emerge.

Many will want to draw parallels between Jenny and Johnny and She & Him (especially given Lewis' previous inclination toward the kind of vintage 1960s girl-group pop that She & Him traffic in), but the songs on I'm Having Fun Now are rougher, tougher, and more rock'n'roll. The album is also a much more modern-sounding pop project, though it similarly owes its success to the chemistry of its creators.

Jenny Lewis's voice on retro-'60s California-evoking pop songs fits perfectly; she sounds right at home despite it being a bit of a departure from any of her previous works. Johnathan Rice's charisma wouldn't be strong enough to carry the entire project himself, but his vocals are a nice foil, and they bring out the humor in each other. Their harmonies are appealing, but they're even better when they're playing off of each other.
