Ugly Is Beautiful proves another showcase for the ironic bowl-cut and JNCO jean-wearing singer's bombastically hooky brand of pop.

The Needle Drop
Oliver Tree’s debut album proves that, beyond the bowl cut and JNCO jeans, there lies serious musical potential.
With ‘Ugly Is Beautiful’, Oliver Tree just about silences his credibility critics by delivering wall-to-wall pop-rock ragers while encouraging fans to be unashamedly themselves, and having a ball doing so.
The debut from this 27-year-old artist-turned-“living meme” chases shock and bombast but winds up surprisingly tame.
Poor Oliver, man.

Oliver Trees career has been both simultaneously annoying and captivating to watch, like a Ying and a Yang of cool and stupid. It's been captivating because of the strange, meme-like quality of his music videos and overall branding of his content, with mentions of scooters, giant pants and bowl cuts not being far away when talking about Oliver Trees music videos. It clear that Oliver Tree considers himself an artist, and it shows in nearly everything he does.

Oliver Oliver Oxen Tree, this isn't fun anymore!

Living meme, unapologetically himself, and potential industry plant, Oliver made a somewhat obnoxious and forced name for himself over the past five years, releasing as many singles as a band trying to take off from one song only. These tracks are super sticky, memorable, and all-around ... read more

He did not let me down.

When Oliver Tree appeared on the scene in 2018 I immediately passed him off as another lofi/indie rap artist that I wouldn't hear about outside of Spotify playlists. The first time he truly impressed me was with his single "Hurt", which did very well on the rock charts and boosted his popularity by quite a bit. ... read more

I hate opening reviews like this but whatever, I don't get it. Why is this record getting so much shit? Like, outside of the label's bullshit, besides the fact that Alien Boy's on another fucking project. I understand why someone would just flat-out dislike Ugly Is Beautiful, but most of the reasons the reviewers here are citing just don't make sense to me, which makes me think some of the people giving this low ratings just don't understand why Oliver Tree fans enjoy his shit. And ... read more
